Our Winter On-Air Drive begins February 12 and runs for 4 days. But you can shorten the drive!
We know you don’t like on-air fund drives. Truthfully, we don’t like them much either (although we try to have as much fun with them as we can!) We would much rather bring you the classical music you enjoy without interruptions. But over 70% of our budget comes from you, our listeners, and the drives are a necessary way to raise the money we need to bring you the classical music you love.
So, here’s the deal.
For every $60,000 we raise by Monday, February 10th, we will shorten the Winter On-Air Drive by one day. We are counting additional gifts, new and gift memberships in this attempt to lop off a day or two. This is your chance to get us back to our regular 100% classical music schedule faster.
Thank you for your continuing belief in, and support of, WBJC. With your help, non-commercial classical music will be heard on WBJC for many years to come.
Sincerely,
|

By John Scherch
Some of the most well-known forms of composition in classical music are of dance music from the pieces’ time. A Bach suite (which he wrote very many of), for example, would contain dances such as an
allemande
(a French German-style dance), a
courante
(a triple meter dance often following an allemande in a Baroque suite), a
sarabande
(another triple meter dance), a
minuet
(triple meter again), a
gigue
(based on an Irish jig), a
passepied
… the list goes on. Many of these styles of dances would be used well beyond the Baroque period by many different composers. Another very prominent example is, of course, the waltz, a popular Viennese dance kept especially famous by Johann Strauss Jr. among many others, and the annual New Year’s Concert held in Vienna where much of his and his contemporaries’ music is used to ring in the new year.
One might think, then, that classical composers today might still incorporate dance themes in their music, and perhaps of their time (they do, but we’ll get to that)...
