JANUARY 2018
President's Letter
Happy New Year!!!

KGC had a fabulous 2017 made possible by YOU -- it's fabulous members. We topped our calendar year off with a magical celebration at Kelly and Ed Chestnut's lovely home. We are grateful for their generous hospitality and warm hearts. Thank you so much, Kelly and Ed.

The holiday floral designs were stellar -- thank you Mary Glerum and Joan Senko! Thank you to Shelley Galloway and Chris Wiedrich for taking photos. And a big thank you to our Head Hostess, Katherine Buehler, and her "elves", Charlotte Walsh, Stephanie Keehn, Grace Harley, Terri Lorenz, Barb McDonough, Cyndi Chase, Marty Shaw, and Tina Rice. The food and wine were stunning and enjoyed by all. Thank you so much for your preparation, serving and clean up. You were an amazing team!

If you've been reading the newsletters and attending meetings, you know that KGC had a great 2017 made possible by you and your commitment to our club and community. Thank you for giving your undertaking your all, and to all members who "stepped up" and did double duty in 2017.

As you are filling in your new calendars, please make sure that you hold Thursday, April 19, for our annual benefit. Sharon Hayes and Kirsten Rider and their committee are planning another great program and luncheon. You won't want to miss it! Our Annual Meeting will be on Wednesday, May 16. A large part of our board will be changing, and we will be celebrating our 2017-18 accomplishments. Please plan to attend.

Please add the January 22 Combined Meeting of the Garden Clubs of Kenilworth to your calendar, too. Eileen Weber of Lake Forest Flowers will be teaching us some tricks of the trade. We'll be gathering at Kenilworth Union Church again at 12:30 p.m. Tea sandwiches, cookies, coffee and tea will be served after Eileen's program. Please watch your inbox for your Evite and r.s.v.p. ASAP. Please don't forget to sign up ASAP  for Flower Arranging 201: Contemporary Design. Please see Marty Shaw's article and registration information in this newsletter.

Finally, watch your inbox and snail mailbox for the GCA Bulletin-Winter Edition. You'll want to be sure to read this one!

The Floral Design Committee will gather 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 16th to brainstorm ideas for the coming year, and make assignments for floral activities. While we sip for inspiration, we will also practice our hand-tied bouquet-making skills, and everyone will take home their own creation. Need a fresh look after the holidays? Ditch the red and embrace the white - the color of new beginnings.

"White: The color of purity, innocence, sympathy, and humility. This flower will show your friend or loved one that you are thinking about them. While it does convey messages of purity and innocence, this color also means new beginnings. If given to a long-term partner, they show you want to move forward and think about marriage. Try white daisies, roses, or gardenias." - Gardentherapy.ca

CONSERVATION
Winter is here, so it's a good time to practice some habits to protect our earth...

Here are some ideas:

  • Recycle your Christmas tree: How Christmas Tree Recycling Works
  • Save energy and money on electronics and at home. A typical household spends about $2,100 a year on energy bills and contributes twice the amount of greenhouse gases to the environment as an average car. Use the Energy Star Home Advisor for ideas projects to increase energy efficiency and comfort in the area where you live.
  • Stay warm, lower your bills and help the environment. Improve your home's comfort and save energy and money while doing the right thing for the environment. Use energy efficiently in your home through heating (or cooling) efficiently and through home improvements.
  • It's the time of year when homes have their highest energy demand of the year. Heating accounts for 34% of all annual utility usage and is part of what makes an average home twice the emitter of carbon dioxide emissions as a vehicle. Here is a way to reduce the demand for expensive space heating.
  • Check the ducts. To ensure that as much warm air as possible is delivered through your central system, check the ductwork and wrap any leaks with duct mastic. Distribution losses (what's lost while air is transported from your furnace through ductwork to the vents) often amounts to 30%. So, sealing ductwork could increase efficiency and the warm air you receive considerably ... keeping you warmer and making your furnace work less. Should You Have the Air Ducts in Your Home Cleaned?
Sometimes it's really simple things that can make a huge difference!
