Building opportunities for sustainable, affordable housing in northern Arizona.

September 2023 Newsletter

NOTE FROM OUR CEO

Fall is definitely in the air and we’re working hard to make progress on multiple housing projects prior to winter setting in! We’re excited to announce that we’ve begun demolition on our newest hotel conversion project – located in Cottonwood. We call the project Oak Wash and, when it’s done, Oak Wash will provide 32 affordable rental properties of transitional housing, serving households experiencing homelessness. We hope, by mid-2024 to have created 76 new apartment units serving our most-vulnerable neighbors.

It’s a busy time of year as we gear up for the colder weather, working to ensure homeless households have access to safe, decent and affordable housing. The nights are getting colder and we’re thrilled to have moved in a mom and her 3-year-old daughter to Sharon Manor toward the end of last month. She was sleeping in her car and we know the nights are cold. Now, she and her daughter have a safe, warm and stable place to call home.

We are also celebrating Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, in partnership with other victim-services agencies in our community. We’re working to increase awareness for domestic violence prevention and support for survivors of abuse. Please follow us on Facebook or Instagram to learn more about our activities in October and how you can help.

Story of Hope: Staying in Flagstaff

Christopher's roots run deep in Flagstaff, a place that has always felt like home to him. Despite his strong connection to the city, the soaring monthly rental rates and high home prices seemed like an insurmountable obstacle, even with his position as an area leader at Gore.

However, Christopher's dreams of homeownership became a reality thanks to his eligibility for HSNA HAP down payment assistance and City of Flagstaff CHAP down payment assistance. With the guidance and support of our Housing Programs Manager, he successfully combined these down payment assistance programs to purchase a resale unit within the City of Flagstaff Landtrust.

Last month, Christopher moved into his new home, a place where he can now proudly call his own. No longer faced with the daunting choice between remaining in Flagstaff and struggling to afford rent, he has found stability and security in his new home. Christopher's story serves as a testament to the transformative power of housing assistance programs in Flagstaff.

HIGHLIGHTS

Construction Has Started

Exciting News! Construction is now underway for our Oak Wash Homes motel conversion project. Kitchenettes are being added into every studio and 1-bedroom unit within this 31-unit motel. Furthermore, we're repurposing the on-site manager's quarters into a 2-bedroom apartment.

With these renovations, we'll have a total of 32 affordable rental units in Cottonwood ready to offer transitional housing to households experiencing homelessness. Stay tuned for more updates as we work towards launching the program mid-2024.
