ISBT Call for Volunteers - WE NEED YOU!
ISBT Responsive Ways of Working - Volunteers Needed

Volunteer Now to Support Your Industry
Be a pioneer and champion of responsive ways of working! Join us on the first ISBT initiative dedicated to aligning and deploying a set of behaviors, processes, and practices that will drive enhanced collaboration across our society!
Across the industry, a system of behaviors and technology-enabled tools is being deployed to enable more agile and collaborative ways of working. They can be used by individuals, teams, and organizations to more effectively collaborate, evolve ways of working, empower teams, and encourage a “test and learn” mindset.
At ISBT, we urgently need assistance to define and implement best practices in this area, including promoting collaborative behaviors and better leveraging collaboration tools such as Basecamp. These responsive working behaviors will be a key enabler to implementation of our Society’s strategic priorities.
If you have expertise, a passion for, or would like to develop skills on responsive working/ collaboration best practices, we are interested in hearing from you for volunteer opportunities. Please contact Manus Mitchell ( or Gary Robson ( to learn more.

Increasing Your Knowledge Increases Your Ability to Solve Problems and Think Outside the Box

  • Here’s a creative example of solving a problem by thinking outside the box: Godzilla was released in 1954 in Japan and was considered the Star Wars of its generation. It was a new take on the classic monster movie, including a spiritual theme and a new generation of special effects. The American company that bought the distribution rights for a large sum of money discovered they had a problem: the movie was in Japanese and the majority of American audiences would not watch a subtitled movie. Not to mention that the Japanese language is very different from English, so any dubbing creates an automatic comical effect! How did the distribution company solve this problem? *Answer at the end.
PET Bottle Course
  • Launching this spring is a two-module course on preforms, blow molding, bottles, PET process chemistry and properties, QC methods, and other key attributes.
  • Watch for the launch date and sign-up link in future Connections!
What People are Saying About the Beverage Institute
  • Quote from a beverage technologist: "These courses helped me establish a foundation that is consistent throughout the industry. I am able to apply these newfound teachings to my current role."
Survey Result
  • 84% of the respondents stated they took valuable hands-on learning home with them from either a Beverage Institute course or an ISBT event.
Course Help Needed for the Beverage Institute
  • The Beverage Institute has multiple activities planned over the next 24 months and needs technical help. Seminars and courses planned for the near future include:
  • Corrugate Materials and Labeling
  • Beverage Processing (Pasteurization Techniques, Raw Materials, and Bottled Water Production)
  • Finished Goods Distribution (Warehousing, Pallets, Logistics, Customer Service, and Supply Chain).

If you would like to be a presenter/contributor in any of these areas, contact Tom Reimer at
Meet Julie Rice Suggs and The Packaging School (TPS)

  • The Packaging School is the Beverage Institute’s partner in bringing state of the art training to the beverage industry.
  • TPS provides the skill set to construct the courses, and then hosts them on their learning management system for 24/7 availability to students. TPS has over 50 multi-module courses on packaging in addition to the current 8 Beverage Institute courses.
  • Julie Rice Suggs (PhD in Food Technology from Clemson University) is the Academic Director and primary contact for the Beverage Institute by ISBT.
  • Julie has created over 30 online courses so far during her tenure at The Packaging School.
  • In her spare time, Julie is very involved with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program.
*Problem Solving Answer: The distributor added new scenes to the movie which featured a young actor they had under contract and who would work for a lower salary (Raymond Burr, a.k.a. Perry Mason). Burr played a news reporter, narrating in English what was going on in the movie, and in key scenes, interviewing characters in English. He stood against a brick wall and wore the same suit in each scene. The characters were either look-a-likes or shot from the back, so the audience could not tell that these weren’t the original Japanese actors or that these were added scenes!
The more you know, the better you can solve problems and help your company succeed.
