In 1994-95, I served as a Seminary Intern at St. John’s, having completed only one year at Yale Divinity School. During this time, I was tasked with translating portions of John's gospel and learning under Canon Bernie Dooly's mentorship.
Canon Bernie Dooly and Deacon Louise Hardman laid the foundation for the Center for Prayer and Spirituality at the Cathedral. Together, they introduced contemplative prayer practices and Celtic Christian theology to our community, emphasizing the presence of God the Creator and Christ in nature.
The Center for Prayer and Spirituality has since become an integral part of our prayerful and learning community. We have engaged in Quiet Garden Mornings and various contemplative practices under the guidance of Owene Courtney, director of formation and spirituality, and the Rev. Dr. Linda Privitera. In May, we eagerly anticipate hosting the Rev. Canon Susanna Gunner, a prominent theological figure and chaplain to the King of England, for teaching and preaching sessions. More information here.
As we look ahead, it is time for the Center for Prayer and Spirituality to undergo a transformation. Over the past months, members of our Vestry and other lay leaders have been in prayerful discussions about establishing a Center for Wellness or a Center for Wellbeing. We believe that both our congregation and the broader community in this city would benefit from a center dedicated to holistic well-being. This center would continue to offer prayer and contemplative practices while also providing support for psychological, physical, financial, and vocational challenges.
I invite you to join me for a series of Dean's Forums focused on the concept of wellness and how Christ may be calling us to wholeness. These forums will feature conversations with experts in various fields and include small group discussion opportunities. Following this series, we will distribute a survey to the entire congregation to gather feedback on your needs and desires regarding such a center.
I encourage you to be a part of this journey. Let us honor the legacy of Canon Bernie Dooly and Deacon Louise Hardman as we evolve and embrace a new chapter for our community.
In Christ’s love

RISE! with Our Children's Ministry
|
During the Easter Season, Felicia Bullock, director of children and families ministry, has created a curriculum focusing on the Easter theme, RISE! Part of this focus involves supporting the Free Wheelchair Mission, a cause that speaks volumes about compassion and inclusion.
In the Hakimian Nursery, young minds are engaged in hands-on activities centered around RISE! - from playing with bubbles and balloons to understanding the significance of supporting those in need through tangible actions. Additionally, these budding philanthropists are involved in creating placemats for the Newcomer’s Lunch, fostering a sense of community and welcoming spirit from an early age.
Both the little ones and the Tweens will delve deeper into the mission of supporting the Free Wheelchair Mission. Through storytelling and meaningful discussions, they learn the importance of empathy and service. They also actively contribute by undertaking various tasks within the Church to earn funds for a wheelchair. Many thanks to Felicia and the entire team for creating such a nurturing environment for our little ones to thrive and make a difference.

St. George's Day Choral Evensong with Artist Reception
Sunday, April 28
5 p.m.
A beloved annual tradition at St. John's Cathedral, the Festal Choral Evensong in honor of St. George will be offered Sunday, April 28. The evensong is a joyful celebration of the patron saint of England featuring music from Timothy Tuller, Canon for Music, the Cathedral Choir, Cathedral Brass, and the Jacksonville Pipes and Drums! |
As a three-time cancer survivor, Greenhill's portraits of women reflect personal experiences of overcoming adversity with grace and courage. Nature is a prominent motif in Greenhill's work, with whimsical compositions featuring birds, moths, and other animals. Through her art, she endeavors to capture the strength and vulnerability of women navigating life's challenges.
Emma Greenhill is no stranger to acclaim, having showcased her work at art shows across Florida and represented by the esteemed Butterfield Garage Art Gallery in St. Augustine. Connect with Emma Greenhill through her website, www.emmagreenhillart.com.
To delve deeper into the artistic narrative, Greenhill's exhibition is accompanied by Jenny Noble Anderson's evocative poetry. Jenny was named a 2023 finalist for the Perseroff Prize in poetry and her first full collection, But Still She Flies: Poems and Paintings, a collaboration with artist Emma Greenhill, received the 2022 Gold Nautilus Book Award. This book may be purchased at the exhibition or by clicking the linked title above.
The title of the featured painting is 'Hear My Voice', 36x48" acrylic and oil on canvas. It is from Emma Greenhill's new series 'Women In Prayer'

The Cerveny Speakers Series presents
The Rev. Canon Susanna Gunner
| |
|
As we near the end of the 50 days of Eastertide, let’s delve into the gospel stories of Jesus’ resurrection and consider how we can embody that resurrection in our daily lives. How can we continue to embrace the message of hope and new beginnings long after Easter, and how can we share this hope with a world in need of healing?
Throughout the weekend, Susanna will incorporate music, poetry, and art to enhance our study of the texts and inspire fresh perspectives. You’ll have the opportunity to reflect, appreciate creativity, and even unleash your creative spirit.
Our schedule is thoughtfully curated to provide moments of introspection and communal connection. Don't miss the Friday Dinner and Social Hour that will set the tone for a weekend of inspiration. On Saturday, join us for a program filled with enriching discussions and a delicious lunch. Susanna will also preach at both Sunday morning services (8 and 10:30 a.m.) and join Dean Kate for a conversation at the 9 a.m. Dean's Forum in Taliaferro Hall.
Best of all, this retreat is entirely FREE. We kindly request that you register for both Friday and Saturday events to ensure we can accommodate everyone comfortably and prepare the appropriate amount of materials. Spread the word and invite your friends to join us for what promises to be a truly memorable and transformative experience.
The weekend is sponsored by the Cerveny Speaker Series, established to honor the ministry of Bishop Frank Cerveny by calling great theologians and preachers to the Diocese of Florida

When you give flowers to the altar in loving memory or in thanksgiving for loved ones your gift keeps giving.
|
Every Monday, Martha Davis, florist extraordinaire, comes in to break down Sunday's altar flowers into smaller bouquets. These beautiful arrangements are delivered by volunteers Anthony Oswalt and Bo Parker or Melonee Slocum to the homes of parishioners or the lobbies of the NorthBank Center for Rehabilitation and Healing or the Cathedral Towers. So when you donate altar flowers, you can be sure they will be greatly appreciated by many!
If you would like to volunteer to create arrangements or to deliver them, please contact the Church Office! We'd love to hear from you.
