Denver Golf's Green Initiatives

John Swain with colleague Ethan Paxton at the greenhouse

Meet John Swain - Denver Golf's Horticulturist

You might ask what does the Golf Horticulturist do in the Winter for the City of Denver?

John: "As the cold winter arrives I’m fortunate enough to be able to transition to the City Greenhouse. The greenhouse is located just across the street from City Park Golf Course and adjacent to the Zoo! It’s the best way to spend the winter. It’s a very enriching experience for me at the greenhouse where I work with a small team to help grow all of the flowers and plants for the golf courses and the entire city."

Winter horticulture tips:

What can you do at home this winter?

  • Take time to rest and think creatively about your horticulture goals for the upcoming season!
  •  Winter watering: Quick Facts from CSU extension…
  1. Water trees, shrubs, lawns, and perennials during prolonged dry fall and winter periods to prevent root damage that affects the health of the entire plant.
  2. Water only when air and soil temperatures are above 40 degrees Fahrenheit with no snow cover.
  3. Established large trees have a root spread equal to or greater than the height of the tree. Apply water to the most critical part of the root zone within the dripline.
  • Organize and inventory seed collection
  • Clean, organize and disinfect tools and any materials that may harbor insects or disease

Summer Junior Coach Applications Now Open!

First Tee – Colorado Rocky Mountains Junior Coach Program was created for young adults to help model and teach the Nine Core Values to our younger participants as well as give them job skills. The program allows us to reduce the ratio of instructors to participants so we can ensure that all of the participants are getting the most out of our classes. The Junior Coach program is also a chance for students to continue to develop their own Life Skills and prepare them for their next step in life. Junior Coaches are chosen based on: application packets, personal interviews, leadership capabilities, their participation in First Tee – Colorado Rocky Mountains programming, and academic performance in school.

Applications due by 2/21/2024. Apply below.

Kennedy Fence Repairs

This winter, Kennedy is replacing some of the boundary fence that is in disrepair. The bulk of this repair will be happening on hole 5 near the park and ballfields, and in other smaller areas where needed.

MORE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

Winter Split Tee Starts

All tee sheets (except Harvard Gulch) will remain on a split tee start on holes 1 and 10 to help reduce frost delays and provide guests with the maximum number of available tee times during the winter months.

What is a split tee start? A split tee start means that there are two 18-hole start times, one off of each 9. Groups that tee off the 10th tee will turn to #1 to complete 18-hole rounds. When searching tee times, both front nine and back nine tee times will show on the tee sheet (for example it will say Starting Front 9 and Starting Back 9). (Example: a foursome can tee off at 9 AM from hole #1 while another foursome can tee off at 9 AM from #10)
