Faculty Spotlight

Dr. David Brewer

Department of English


Dr. Brewer teaches a wide range of courses including film genres, film sound, fantasy and science fiction, poetry, the history of the book/books as material objects, and the history of magic. His teaching focuses on helping students make connections, engage in new ways, and develop skills transferrable to other courses and their post-college lives. Far removed from another potential career, he considered joining the Postal Service, Dr. Brewer's teaching has been recognized through receipt of the Ronald and Deborah Ratner Distinguished Teaching Award. Stop by his office to talk about magic, table-top roleplaying games, whiskey, the eighteenth century, or his travels to Tallinn (the capital of Estonia). Program Spotlight

Black Studies Certificate

This certificate provides students with a robust introduction to the discipline of Black Studies, including the field’s geographic and demographic scope, methods and modes of analysis, topical and thematic concerns, applications to interdisciplinary teaching and learning, and commitments to community outreach, engagement, and activism. Learning and Motivation Strategies for College Success - ESEPSY 1259

This course helps students develop the academic beliefs and behaviors essential to success in college. More than just a study-skills course, it helps students become strategic learners. In this 3-credit course, students learn both practical skills and the research that supports them. Sections offered both in-person and online (asynchronous). Read about topics covered and enroll.

Academic Success Strategies for International Students - ESEPSY 2060

This course supports the adjustment to U.S. academic culture and helps international students thrive at Ohio State. The course aims to increase students’ confidence using a variety of academic strategies and students’ understanding of why certain behaviors and skills are emphasized in U.S. academic culture. It is a 2-credit, 7-week course that was developed in partnership with the Office of International Affairs. Read about topics covered and enroll.

Global Education Funding Deadline

Applies to SU 2024, AU 2024, and Academic Year 2024 - 2025 Programs

Monday, January 15 by 4 p.m.


Are you interested in studying abroad? The next arts and sciences scholarship application window is for programs taking place summer term 2024 (including May session), autumn semester only 2024 programs, as well as academic year 2024 - 2025 programs. Applicants will be considered for need-based scholarships designed for arts and sciences majors who would not normally be able to afford an education abroad, as well as other global education scholarship opportunities. Merit and Need-Based Scholarships Deadline

Thursday, February 1 by 4 p.m.


Apply for College of Arts and Sciences merit and/or need-based scholarships open to currently enrolled students. Scholarships will be applied toward the 2024 - 2025 academic year. Eligibility information and online application.

Aida Cannarsa Snow Scholarships Deadline

For Students Interested in a Career in Publishing or Publication

The Aida Cannarsa Snow scholarships support students who plan to pursue a career in publishing or publication. To be eligible, students must have a current FAFSA on file with Student Financial Aid and demonstrate financial need. Scholarships will be applied toward the 2024 - 2025 academic year. Global Education Program Spotlight

London Theatre Program

Dive into the dynamic theatre scene in London and the multicultural dimension of theatre practice in Britain today. Participants attend a play almost every day of the program in a wide variety of styles and venues. These venues include the Royal National Theatre, the Almeida, the Old Vic, the Young Vic, the Kiln Theatre, and Shakespeare's Globe, among others. In London, mornings will be devoted to class meetings while afternoons will be held open for independent exploration and rehearsals. Are you interested in studying abroad but concerned about the cost? There are a number of resources to help you. Check out funding available from the College of Arts and Sciences (see global education funding opportunities described above) and the Office of International Affairs. You may also check with your major department to see if they offer funding for an education abroad.

Denman Undergraduate Research Forum

The Denman Undergraduate Research Forum provides an opportunity for graduating student researchers to share their research endeavors with the broader community. Application for the 29th annual Denman Forum will open in January. The Denman Forum will take place March 5, 2024. Stone Lab Research Experience for Undergraduates Fellowship Program

Apply for a 2024 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Fellowship Program at Stone Lab, Ohio State's island campus on Lake Erie. Selected students receive a $5,500 stipend and free room and meals for the eight-week fellowship experience. Participants will learn how to conduct scientific research in the field alongside top scientists. The fellowship runs from June 3 through July 26, 2024.

Secure Your Valuables Before Traveling for Break

Before you travel for break, be sure to take items of value home, including money, credit cards and IDs. Record serial numbers of your devices. Lock all doors and windows. Disconnect electrical extensions. If something is missing when you return, alert the police immediately. You can obtain free safety devices, including window and door alarms as well as smart plugs from the Office of Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement. And don't forget to keep your heat on to at least 60 degrees - you don't want to risk having your pipes burst and damage your belongings and much more!

Health, Wellness and Safety

Mental Health and Wellness for Winter Break

The semester is coming to an end, but support for your mental health and well-being from Counseling & Consultation Service (CCS) is always available, whether you’re on campus or not. For support with problem-solving, campus resources, or just a space to vent, Let’s Talk consultations will continue on weekdays throughout winter break. These are informal, confidential 15 - 20-minute conversations with a CCS counselor. During this time of year, you may want to talk about family, loneliness, travelling anxiety, or current events.

Anxiety Management Group

Anxiety Management Group (AMG) helps students develop the skills necessary to stop negative or unhelpful thoughts and start thinking and acting in more positive ways. The group offers a safe and supportive environment for students to make connections and learn how to manage their anxiety in a healthier way. AMG is a 7-week CBT-informed group. More information

Flu shots are available at Student Life's Student Health Services (SLSHS). To receive a vaccine, you must schedule an appointment. SLSHS offers several options for receiving your influenza vaccination:

• Schedule an appointment with the Pharmacy via My BuckMD and select
