In 2022, Social Security Beneficiaries Will See the Biggest Increase in 39 Years | Cost-of-living increases are tied to the consumer price index, and rising inflation rates and gas prices caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic mean Social Security recipients will get a large boost in 2022. | | | |
Medicare Premiums to Increase Dramatically in 2022 | Medicare premiums are rising sharply next year, cutting into the large Social Security cost-of-living increase. The basic monthly premium will jump 15.5 percent, or $21.60, from $148.50 to $170.10 a month. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the premium and other Medicare cost increases on November 12, 2021. | | | |

On December 13, 2021, The York Hospital Center for Older Adults hosted the informational webinar, “Planning Ahead: Support & Guidance Through Life’s Transitions featuring Mary Kathryn Brennan, Esq. who offered guidance on navigating important topics such as asset protection planning, dealing with age and disability, and maintaining health and autonomy as we age with the goal of helping participants gain a better understanding of how to maintain financial and physical health, safety, well-being, and quality of life for yourself or older loved ones.

Adult Day Program at the Sam L. Cohen Center: Social Club for Members and Respite for Caregivers
The members of the Adult Day program at the Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s Sam L. Cohen Center in Biddeford call it “the social club” because it offers them an opportunity to socialize, stay active, and be mentally engaged in the company of other older adults living with memory impairments including Alzheimer's and other dementias.
The daily activities are designed to honor and engage the members in ways that will be fun, stimulating, and interesting. Our person-centered care provides a safe environment, maximum independence, and activities that improve the mental and physical state of the members. The Adult Day program has been shown to significantly improve the health of our members and to slow down the physical and mental decline resulting from different forms of dementia; in only a few weeks staff and caregivers notice positive changes in our members’ presence and engagement with others.
Not only is the Adult Day program “just like home but with more to do” for members but it also offers a respite for care partners. Our staff works with care partners to help them address behavioral challenges and the social isolation and loneliness that can accompany caring for a person with dementia. In addition, our Family Caregiver Specialists offer educational classes, forums, and group and individual support sessions for caregivers.
Many members pay with private funds or long-term care insurance. In some instances, state funding through MaineCare is available. The Veterans' Administration offers a program that pays for day center hours. Staff can assist with locating subsidies for care.
Currently, from January 1 through March 31, 2022, we are running a special promotion for new members: they can purchase a membership at the reduced rate of $17 per hour with a minimum of 12 hours per week (3 days at 4 hours, or 2 days at 6 hours).

Our office staff has been vaccinated, and we practice social distancing, but remote meeting through the use of technology like Zoom is safe and convenient, so we continue to encourage its use. | |
