CAPTAIN'S CORNER

We are in the process of adding a new Gulf category to the existing awards program this year which will allow boats that are traveling to the Eastern Gulf as well as local boats from that area to participate in our Yearlong Club Awards Program Tournament. This will be a separate award from our existing Texas and International divisions but will include points accumulated while fishing out of any U.S. Gulf port including Texas. The awards committee has been discussing this for a while and feel that it will bring more participation from the fishermen that spend a majority of their time fishing off of Louisiana and areas to the east for the first part of the summer. If anyone has any questions regarding this new awards category please don't hesitate to call me directly at 409-789-2975. Thanks!

THE LEARNING CURVE
Written by Captain Troy Day
Came across an interesting research study on the feeding habits of blue marlin the other day. Even though it is in Japan, there are parallels to our fishery, as most of the fish were caught at FADS. The data came from the stomach contents of about 1,000 blue marlin caught by artisanal fishermen over the course of 3 years.
Here are some of the pieces that I thought were interesting:
  • 40% of the marlin's stomachs contained undigested or partially digested prey
  • 52% of the marlin had completely empty stomachs
  • The percentage of fish with empty stomachs was highest in fish caught over natural bottom, and lower in fish caught at a FAD
  • Skipjack tuna made up 35% of their prey by number and 75% by weight
  • Squid made up 18% of their diet, although only 0.4% by weight, so the squid were small
  • Only 5% of their diet was made up of dolphinfish
  • Escolar/snake mackerels made up a little over 10% of their diet by number, which is interesting because all are deep-dwelling species
  • The heaviest prey item found was a 18 lb skippie, found in the stomach of a 98 in (LJFL) fish
The researchers stated in conclusion that the relative importance of skipjack tuna as a prey species in both weight and number increased with the size of the blue marlin, so much so that skipjack were the only prey found in the largest class of blue marlin.
