Sixth Cohort of EDGE Program Graduated May 1

The Grand Island Chamber’s EDGE program has officially concluded cohort No. 6, hosting a private graduation event for participants and employers last week at Home Federal Bank.

The EDGE program, designed to sharpen essential skills of local employees, is administered twice a year by Courtney Glock (Grand Island Chamber) and Tonja Brown (Grow Grand Island). EDGE participants are paired with a community leader who serves as a mentor through the 10-week program.

Since it began in fall of 2021, EDGE has graduated 92 individuals, all of whom are employed with Grand Island businesses. The Chamber will host its next upskilling cohort this fall.

Chamber Partners, Apprentices Earn the Spotlight

Chamber staff was on hand for Apprentice Signing Day, held May 1 at the Career Pathways Institute. See this media coverage by The Independent (subscription) and Local 4 TV.

Seven Grand Island Senior High students signed on as apprentices with Chamber partners — AGI Grand Island, Chief Buildings, Chief Fabrication, ​Holiday Express, and Overhead Door.

GIPS Superintendent Matt Fisher thanked the business community for its support for the Academy of Technical Sciences and its apprenticeship program. The pathways offer dual credit courses for juniors and seniors through Central Community College, with students earning industry certifications.

The academy at GISH offers specialized pathways in five high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand careers. GISH is one of only 11 schools in the Nebraska with this program — six high schools, three community colleges, and two universities.

Survivorship 101: Cancer Rehab Program

CHI Health's free cancer rehabilitation program helps survivors regain their physical, emotional, and spiritual health after treatment. 

Cancer Survivorship 101, facilitated by specially-trained nurses and mental health practitioners, is a 9-week holistic program starting in March at Good Samaritan and St. Francis. Weekly sessions offer practical guidance for the next steps after treatment, including research-based advice on topics like nutrition, exercise, coping skills, and healing. The small, supportive group setting provides opportunities to ask questions and share insights.

Evidence shows that Cancer Survivorship 101 reduces depression and anxiety, while increasing hope, resilience, quality of life, and happiness.
