'Mayor for a Day' Essay Contest Winners Announced

Earlier this month, nearly 90 sixth-grade students in Grand Island showed their community pride and forward thinking when each wrote a 400-word essay on how they want to see the city grow and improve by the time they graduate. A dozen of those students have been awarded cash prizes or gift certificates as winners of the Grand Island Chamber’s and City of Grand Island’s first-ever “Mayor for a Day” essay contest.

Students from Grand Island Public Schools, Northwest Public Schools, Grand Island Central Catholic Schools, and Trinity Lutheran School wrote about why they love living in Grand Island, but also detailed what changes they want to see by 2030. Habitat for Humanity Announces New Director

Last week, the board of directors for the Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity announced Lindsey Jurgens as its new executive director.

Lindsey has worked as the program coordinator for Leadership Unlimited for three years and currently serves on the board of education for Grand Island Public Schools. Read more here.

Coming Soon: Grand Island Area Farmers' Market

Misty Schaecher, president of the Grand Island Area Farmers' Market, announced last week that the farmers' market will begin on Saturday, June 1. The market will be open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from June 1 until this fall in the north parking lot of Bosselman Enterprises. The market will feature produce from local farmers and craft vendors.

June 19 Coffee Connections: GI's Good Life District

The Chamber's next Coffee Connections is set for Wednesday, June 19 at The Chocolate Bar. The topic will be Grand Island's forthcoming Good Life District, with guest presenters Roger Bullington, president and general manager of Chief Construction and Development, and Tonja Brown, chair for the Grow Grand Island Area Partnership.

Coffee Connections is a new program offering morning networking and member education opportunities for Chamber members. You can drop by for just a few minutes or stay for the full 90 minutes. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. and members can network until 8 a.m., when the 30-minute presentation will begin. Afterward, there will be time for questions or networking until 9 a.m.

There's no cost to attend Coffee Connections, but members are asked to RSVP so we can get an approximate headcount.
