YOUR CHAMBER THIS WEEK

Chamber Salutes Grand Island's Class of 2024

To combat "brain drain" in Grand Island, the Chamber has implemented several initiatives to make area high schoolers more aware of the fantastic career opportunities throughout the community.

This year, the Chamber presented a send-off letter and luggage tag to area graduates. Courtney Glock, Chamber vice president, authored a letter emphasizing the vast array of career paths that exist in our community. The gift of a luggage tag symbolizes that no matter how far you travel, Grand Island graduates should always consider our community home.

Primary Election Is Tomorrow, May 14

Tomorrow, May 14, is Nebraska's primary election day. The polls are open from 8 a.m. to

8 p.m. Find your polling place -- and don’t forget about Nebraska’s voter ID law.

Governor's Town Hall This Friday, May 17

Gov. Jim Pillen will hold a town hall in Grand Island at 11:30 a.m. this Friday, May 17, at The Hideout (1607 S Locust St., Suite C).

This town hall is one of several the governor is holding throughout Nebraska as talk continues of a possible special legislative session to debate a plan to send more state funds to local entities with the aim of reducing local property taxes. The Independent (subscription) reports the governor has suggested eliminating virtually all sales tax exemptions. A possible increase in the state sales tax rate is still on the table as well, according to reports.

How Businesses Can Spot Counterfeit Cash

We continue to hear reports about businesses falling victim to the use of counterfeit cash. News Channel Nebraska has published this story on how criminals avoid being detected at the time of purchase, including waiting to use counterfeit money when stores are busy.

Still Time to Register for May 15 'Coffee Connections'

Members still have time to register for Wednesday's (May 15) "Coffee Connections." This will mark the debut of these new Chamber networking-and-education sessions. Coffee Connections will be held the third Wednesday of every month at The Chocolate Bar.

Doors open at 7:30 a.m. and members may network until 8 a.m., when we will begin a 30-minute presentation on a business-related issue. Coffee Connections will conclude around 8:30 a.m., but members are free to network as long as their schedule allows.

This month's topic will be the EPIC Option Consumption Tax. Jim Vokal, CEO of the Platte Institute, a free-market think tank, will discuss what the EPIC tax would mean for businesses and families. (Note: The GI Chamber opposes the EPIC plan.)  There's no cost to attend, but please RSVP so we can get an approximate headcount.
