OUR FAVORITE STAR WARS MOMENTS

Audiences were very much in the spirit last weekend at Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back In Concert. “This is my favorite movie, and my favorite score,” said guest conductor Thiago Tiberio from the podium. “But it’s very difficult! If we’re not breaking a sweat up here, something’s wrong!” he chuckled. Our Orchestra was more than up to the task, delivering thrilling performances of John Williams’ music along with the film.

Here are some of our favorite moments:

ADULT ENSEMBLES THIS FALL AT CAPE SYMPHONY

Cape Symphony’s ensembles for adults bring joy to musicians and audiences alike.

Flute players flourish in our Flute Choir for adults with previous experience. This group gave an open-air performance during the Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival earlier this month, and the organizer was delighted: “Your group is the first and only to have performed in one of our Cape Cod Hydrangea Society gardens. From the reaction of visitors during your playing I would say that this performance was a success!” Flute Choir meets at our Barnstable campus Tuesdays at 7:00 PM. Registration is now open for the Fall semester, beginning September 3.

For string players, Seaside Strings is a fun group for adults of all skill levels. Its low-pressure setting is ideal for developing technical and rhythmic skills. The ensemble plays show tunes and classical music and presents a concert for family and friends at semester’s end. Seaside Strings meets at our Barnstable campus Tuesdays at 5:00 PM. Register now to join us in the Fall.

DEMOS & DUOS AT OSTERVILLE VILLAGE LIBRARY

Cape Symphony was delighted to bring our Demos & Duos program to the Osterville Public Library last week.

Three of our outstanding faculty members (David Gable, violin; Maria Spraker, harp; Joe Scott, guitar) and five terrific students (Kevin Dang, piano; Shiloh and Shenandoah Theroux, violin; Miya Henderson, guitar; Remi Schreiner, harp) participated. Each student shared a bit about their instrument and performed a duet with their teacher. Then, children and parents in the audience got to check out the instruments up close at our “Instrument Petting Zoo.”

Over 75 people attended, and a good time was had by all… so much so that Cape Symphony and Osterville Village Library will make Demos & Duos an annual event.

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC HISTORY

Italian composer Gioachino Rossini is in this week’s 19th century news: On July 30, 1824, he took charge of Theâtre-Italien in Paris as part of a highly remunerative contract with the French government. On August 3, 1829, his long-anticipated grand opera Guillaume Tell (William Tell) premiered at Salle Le Peletier. Exhausted, Rossini retired soon after that.

The Cape Symphony Orchestra will perform the overture to Rossini’s La Gazza Ladra in our Passport to Rome Masterpiece concert on January 25 & 26, 2025. Darko Butorac will conduct. It’s not too soon to secure your tickets!

A MESSAGE FROM MIKE

Cape Symphony Musician Residency Initiative

Dear Cape Cod Community,

We invite you to become a host family for our talented Cape Symphony Orchestra musicians during concert weeks here on Cape Cod. As a per-service orchestra, over 75% of our musicians travel from afar, some as far as New York City, to bring world-class music to our community.

Your support in providing housing for our musicians is invaluable. By opening your home, you not only help us keep our costs down and ticket prices affordable, but you also have the unique opportunity to get to know our musicians beyond the stage. It's a chance to build lasting relationships and contribute to the vibrant cultural fabric of our community.

We hope you will consider this meaningful opportunity to support the Cape Symphony and help us continue to enrich lives through music. Your generosity and hospitality will make a significant impact and be deeply appreciated by all of us. For more information, please click here!

Thank you for your continued support.

Warm regards,

Michael Albaugh
