Leaves Color Change

Ever wonder why leaves change colors as the season goes on? Read below to learn everything you need to know about the seasonal leaf color change:

Leaves change color in autumn because the shorter days and cooler temperatures cause chlorophyll, the green pigment responsible for photosynthesis, to break down. As the green fades, other pigments like carotenoids (yellow and orange) and anthocyanins (red and purple) become visible. These pigments either have been present all along or are produced in response to fall conditions. Environmental factors like temperature and moisture also influence the intensity of the colors before the tree sheds its leaves for winter!

Seasonal Activities

As the weather starts to cool down, Northeast Ohio offers many different activities to continue the fun weekends! Below is a list of fall festivities to partake in:

  • Apple picking
  • Pumpkin patches
  • Hiking
  • Horseback riding
  • Haunted houses
  • Scenic drives
  • Camping
  • Watching football
  • Baking fall dishes
  • Local markets

No matter what you do, remember to spend time doing what you love with the ones you love!

Importance of Vitamin D

As autumn is approaching, it is important to maintain optimal vitamin D levels. With shorter days and fewer hours of sunlight, our bodies can experience side effects from the lack of vitamin D. Below are potential benefits of maintaining healthy vitamin D levels.

  • Strengthens bones and teeth
  • Boosts immune system
  • Improves mood and fights depression
  • Supports heart health
  • Can aid in weight loss and maintenance.
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Enhances muscle function
  • Lowers risk of type 2 diabetes
  • Supports cognitive function
  • Improves skin health
  • Supports respiratory health

(The benefits of vitamin D mentioned above may vary depending on individual health conditions, lifestyle, and other factors.)
