Milestones & Memories...

August was always "Marine's Clearance Sale" dating from the late 1960's or early 1970's. The date of the sale was held for three days over a weekend, usually in the middle of the month. It became the "Tent Sale" in the early 1980's as this popular annual event started to grow. The giant tent was set up behind what is now our Garden Department. Under the big top, there were plywood tables on sawhorses that were piled high with special buys, closeout and discontinued merchandise. Everything was marked down for quick sale. Special buys on rugs, major appliances, sleep sofas and furniture were the stars of the show. There were long tables of specially priced bed & bath items as well as products from every department like flooring, power and hand tools, paint, containers, garden, kitchen appliances and unclaimed or slightly used orders. Building materials featured windows and doors that may have been slightly shopworn or from special orders gone wrong. It took all hands-on deck to set up and load the tables and prepare for the sale event.

Each morning of the three-day event, there was a long line of customers waiting to get in and claim the best clearance goods, as each day more merchandise was brought out to the tent. Of course, there was plenty of free freshly made popcorn and there was a raffle with prizes drawn at the end of each day. Saturday by midafternoon, the tables and merchandise were thinning out. Then the mark downs really sizzled. The last hour of the day, whatever merchandise that remained was consolidated and offers taken for whatever was left. The goal was for nothing to remain behind by closing! Customers never saw this, but at closing all the employees came together in a well-practiced effort to clear the inside of the tent of the empty tables and sweep up so that the tent cloud be removed the next day. The final Tent Sale was held in 2012 and has been replaced by clearance areas in each department.

MITER SAW STANDS

Compound miter saws are essential to present day residential construction, but on their own they don’t support longer materials. That’s why most people mount them on stands of one kind or another that also support the pieces to be cut. Folding saw stands are easily portable and collapse to manageable sizes, but they’re not particularly versatile as work platforms. They hold the saw and the workpiece of the moment, but nothing else. That’s why I prefer these shop-built trestles. They can be made to suit any cutting jobs and provide work surfaces and even electrical outlets for work beyond cutting.

I was provided three different 12” compound miter saws for review so I built a “work bench” for each, made from 3/4” plywood. The saws are bolted in place so accurate repetitive cuts can be made and the set-ups can be moved securely. The length is under 8’ for an easy fit in a pick-up or van. On each, the saw is offset to the right. This may seem backwards to some, but I prefer cutting bevels and miters with the bulk of the materials to the left so that’s where I have greater bench length and support. With the adjustable laser guides and shadow lines of current saws, it’s easy to cut from either end, it’s just a matter of preference.

I leave room behind the fence line for tools, cut-offs, or whatever else I might want close at hand. On the longer side, I’ve included Kreg plates for their hold-down clamps that I use to set stops for repetitive cuts. The electrical outlets aren’t needed to run my battery powered saws, but they’re good for chargers and the few corded tools I still use. It’s connected via a short cord stored beneath the trestle.

Other advantages over folding stands: the trestles can be laid across a pick-up tailgate or on saw horses, which can carry a lot of materials waiting to be cut. Oh, and they can be custom painted to match the saws.

August is a gift to share!

Sharing your Nantucket home with family and friends can be a lot of fun, but not when all the work falls on you. Many friends say they spend all their time running to the market, picking up wet towels or doing laundry. I’ve lived on Nantucket long enough to know, the key to happy hosting is relaxed planning.

Make a list of things going on around town as well as a flexible schedule. Tip: Assign a job to even the youngest guests. This creates an environment where everyone is on vacation together and you aren’t the “host.”

Pre-arrival: send an email with a schedule - no matter how loose, and ask guests what they most want to do.  You might add: “I have a Yoga class from 8-9 am on Saturday morning. You’re welcome to join me, but feel free to be lazy and sleep in. Coffee will be made by 7:30 a.m. help yourself to anything in the fridge”. Make up a pretty tray of baked goods. Include a fresh loaf of Portuguese bread. Find small appliances like a 4-cup coffee maker or a French press in Housewares.
