Captain's Corner
Written by Captain Kevin Deerman
Tournament season is in full swing on the Texas coast and overall the fishing has been great! Blue Marlin have shown up in large numbers which are evident in the verification forms we are receiving for the Annual Awards Program. It's great to see the participation that we are having from our members this year and it looks like it's going to be close up to the end of the summer. There have been a few White Marlin and Sailfish mixed in on the upper coast reports, but the bite has really slowed down for most of the dredge fishermen for the past few weeks. Hopefully that will change shortly for the remainder of the tournaments.

The Learning Curve
Written by Captain Troy Day
A few days ago, I caught up with Brooks Kelm, who shot the amazing drone video a few years ago on Miss Behavin': https://vimeo.com/118580370.
Here are some tips Brooks shared with me for getting good drone fishing footage during the fight:
  • The DJI Phantom series (the 4 is the current model) is very reliable and probably the most user-friendly while still being reasonably priced.
  • Most drones have a factory setting where they "return to home" once the battery life falls to 20%. You MUST change that setting to 0% or the drone will take off out of sight (and control) at 20% battery remaining and you'll have to chase it with the boat.
  • You have to be ready to launch it at all times, so that when you get the bite, you can get it up quickly and get the good jumping footage that usually occurs early in the fight...calibrate it so that it knows your starting position and launch it.
  • To get good shots of jumping fish, you have to risk the drone being close to the water.  He said that once you buy the drone, you have to be OK with the fact that it may go in the water at any time.
  • While filming, don't change the camera direction constantly (leave it in one direction for at least 5 seconds) or you'll get choppy video that will be impossible to edit.
Thank you Brooks for your insights! (@bhkbruce on Instagram),
