🌼 Happy Daffodil Month 🌼
The truck above is a restored 1947 1/2 ton pick-up flatbed truck with Marine's original green and gold colors. This is the same type truck Marine started delivering lumber with when the business first opened. Marine restored the iconic truck in 1997 and it became Marine's "Daffy Parade" truck. Every year, a different employee would have the honor of driving it from in town out to 'Sconset with all the other vintage cars, as seen in bottom right.
Pictured above (top left) is former Vice President and retired Building Materials Manager, Bill Yarmy, and former longstanding employee Allen Fields (passenger in top right photo) driving the truck in the 1997 parade.

One of my very first jobs in residential construction was cleaning up worksites. I did it with a broom, dustpan, and brush, and still use them often, but after getting a shop vacuum, the job got easier and the sites got cleaner. Where I once had that one vacuum for all purposes, I now have… well, don’t make me admit it!
The category of job site vacuums now includes everything from hand-held cordless ones to large capacity wet/dry models, both corded and cordless. I even have a backpack vac good for cleaning stairways and more.
|
My smallest is a Milwaukee hand-held canister vac powered by a 12v battery. It hangs on the shop wall where it’s easily reached for quick pick-ups around the miter saw or in cabinet corners. I have three slightly larger compact vacs with 18v battery power from Milwaukee, Makita, and Bosch. One or another of these rides in the van so I can clean up wherever I’m working. A big step up from these is my battery powered Milwaukee 9 gallon wet/dry vac that I hook up to tools when I’m working away from the shop. With its dual batteries its power is similar to corded models.
| |
In the shop for heavier clean-up I rely on a corded Shop-Vac with a large diameter hose for the larger debris that hits the floor. What it lacks in advanced features, it makes up for with economy and reliability. It’s been in service for more than a decade with no care beyond replacing full bags.
| |
At the top of my list are corded vacs from Milwaukee, Makita, Fein, and Festool. These all are of good capacity and power, and are very good for dust collection from power tools. All four feature automatic activation when connected to corded power tools. Makita’s AWS system even allows the auto on/off with properly equipped cordless tools. I look forward to the day when this is the industry standard.
Nature may abhor a vacuum, but I’m all for them!

Spring: A Time To Refresh!
April is finally here, and with it an opportunity to make small tweaks for spring and to uncover new use of spaces. Assess what can be refreshed, even reconsidered, and replaced. A pretty teapot or Mason jar brimming with Daffodils, brings an out-of-the-way space to life and is too intoxicating to ignore. While familiarity seduces us to return to the traditions we love most, there are new products on the market that help do them better. If you’re just arriving to open your vacation home, get rid of the closed-up musty feeling of winter in closets and drawers with the new shea butter soaps from Michel Design Works. The scent of Wild Hydrangea Blossoms will remind you that summer’s on the way. Big bonus: The packaging is gift-worthy gorgeous!
Don’t underestimate the power of scents when suggesting a mood. Who isn’t craving a room that exudes springtime fresh or the promise of summer? Also check out the sophisticated line of candles, reed diffusers and room sprays, from Apotheke in Housewares. The Sea Salt Grapefruit scent is “just right subtle,” to give your home an amazing infusion of a breeze of salty air.
