New Hotline for American Indian Survivors of Domestic Violence
Native survivors of domestic and dating violence can use the nation's first crisis line dedicated for tribal communities. The StrongHearts Native Helpline seeks to offer culturally relevant, safe and confidential resources. The first region of service is Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Callers outside the three-state area can call StrongHearts as the helpline develops its services.
Defining Trauma-Informed Services
To understand how the concept of a trauma-informed approach is both viewed and applied in addressing domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking, the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) commissioned a project to capture the national landscape of understanding about trauma-informed policies and practices for OVW stakeholders.
A National Survey Shines Light on the Nature and Scope of Teen Dating Violence
The National Survey of Teen Relationships and Intimate Violence is the first to provide a comprehensive, national portrait of teen dating violence with detailed measurements of both those who perpetratesuch violence, and who has been victimized.
To
make sure that domestic violence advocates are ready to respond to contacts made by immigration officials, this resource walks front line advocates through what to do should ICE contact them looking for an individual.
These outreach flyers let survivors in the community know that domestic violence programs exist and offer free and confidential services and will not report undocumented individuals to ICE. If you would like assistance customizing these posters for your program, please reach out to Jess Staskal for assistance.
This 5-part curriculum developed by the National Network to End Domestic Violence strengthens survivor and advocates' understanding of finances, helping survivors of domestic violence move from short-term safety to long-term security.

Free Haircuts for Survivors through Share-A-Haircut
|
|
 For each Hair Cuttery haircut purchased in Maryland on May 1 and May 2, 2017, one FREE haircut certificate will be mailed directly to specific local programs to provide haircuts for domestic violence victims and their children.
Haircuts purchased in Maryland on those dates will result in an equal number of free haircut certificates, which will be mailed directly to specific local programs in mid-May, and are valid through July 26, 2017. In 2016, Hair Cuttery donated more than 55,000 free haircut certificates to survivors across the country.

National DV Hotline & LoveIsRespect Release NEW Maryland State Data

|
The National Domestic Violence Hotline and LoveIsRespect released their 2016 State Reports, showing the number of calls, texts, and chats they received about domestic violence.
In 2016, the National Domestic Violence Hotline documented 3,235 contacts from Maryland. The state ranks 17th in terms of contact volume to The Hotline. An overwhelming majority of the victims and survivors (93%) said they were experiencing emotional and verbal abuse, as well as physical abuse (65%), economic/financial abuse (22%) and sexual abuse (9%).
Their top concerns were shelter, legal advocacy, and individual counseling. 34% of callers disclosed that there were children involved in the situation.
In 2016, LoveIsRespect documented 431 contacts from Maryland, a 31% increase from 2015. The state ranks 15th in terms of contact volume. An overwhelming majority of the victims and survivors (92%) said they were experiencing emotional and verbal abuse, as well as physical abuse (56%), and sexual abuse (19%). Their top concerns were shelter, legal advocacy, and individual counseling.

Survey on the Impact of Federal Policies on Immigrant Survivors

Together the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), Casa de Esperanza, the Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence (API-GBV), Tahirih Justice Center, National Alliance to End Sexual Violence (NAESV) and the National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH) have developed a survey for advocates and attorneys to better understand the impact of recent changes in immigration policy on survivors. They hope to be able to use the data to inform their policy work and media responses. The survey will close on Tuesday, April 25, 2017.

The SAAM 2017 campaign is
Engaging New Voices. The focus will be on involving coaches, faith leaders, parents, Greek Life, and bystanders with preventing sexual assault. Many groups know about sexual assault and believe it is a problem, but they don't know how they can help.
 The SAAM 2017 campaign toolkit provides resources on engaging new voices to talk about preventing sexual assault. This is a
toolkit for advocates, campus personnel, students, and allies. These materials can be used to engage the entire community to take action to end sexual assault.

NNEDV Urges Rejection of Proposed Federal Budget Cuts
|
|
 In March, the President released the framework for his proposed FY18 budget (known as the skinny budget), with a more detailed budget to be released in May. The proposed framework, though scarce on details, includes
proposed topline cuts that could impact programs that serve survivors, such as the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA). Additionally, the budget calls for the elimination of key programs that are critical to victims of domestic violence, and reductions in other important programs.
The skinny budget framework proposes a topline cut of 18% to programs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and a 4% cut to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
