Service Highlight

With its ability to capture detailed 3D models of structures, landscapes, and archaeological sites, 3D Laser Scanning, also known as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, has found various applications to benefit the preservation and restoration of historic assets.

GEL Solutions has been called upon to support multiple projects related to the investigation of historic structures. Our approach often involves scanning the target area multiple times in scheduled increments, typically over the course of several weeks or months. The collected data is then processed and extracted, generating information from each data set which can be analyzed and compared to detect concerns such as settlement, movement and deformation. Other uses for 3D Laser Scanning on historic structures include as-built surveys, building information modeling (BIM), and clash detection.

Visit our website for more details about our 3D Laser Scanning services.

Subsurface Fun Facts

Recent 3D Scans reveal details of the Titanic

New details about the sinking of the Titanic may come to light as the first full-sized digital scan was executed, revealing a more complete view of the entire ship than had ever been accomplished before.

The scan was performed in the of summer 2022 by Magellan Ltd, a deep-sea mapping company, and Atlantic Productions, who are working on a film about the project. Stationed on a specialist ship, the team operated submersibles by remote control and spent over 200 hours surveying the underwater structure. Considering challenges such as immense depth, ocean currents, and the precision required, this endeavor was no easy task to accomplish. 700,000 images in all were collected to generate a 3D Model of the ship in it's entirety.

In North Carolina, any engineering and surveying services are performed by GEL Engineering of NC, Inc. from the Greensboro and Raleigh locations.
