North Kawartha Short Term Rental Survey

Closing date July 5, 2024!

The Township of North Kawartha is currently reviewing Short Term Rental accommodations and their effects or impact on North Kawartha as a community.


A Short Term Rental Advisory Committee has been formed to examine the potential positive and negative impacts on quality of life, the environment, regulations, property ownership, and economic development in North Kawartha. As part of this process, the committee wants to hear from you.

Taxation Update

Keep an eye out for your next tax bill! The 2024 Final Tax Bills were mailed on Friday, June 21, 2024, and include Two (2) Installments that are due on:


  • Monday, July 29, 2024
  • Thursday, September 26, 2024


The interim tax bill was mailed at the end of February and included the two (2) installments that were due on March 26, 2024, and May 29, 2024. The mailed interim tax bill also included the 2024-2025 pink Transfer Waste Site Pass. If you did not receive your interim tax bill, please contact the Finance Department through email or at 705-656-4445 extension 905.


Make sure you receive your tax bills!

Avoid the hassle of postal delays and sign up to receive your tax bills via email through the Email Consent form. Still want to receive a mailed copy of your tax bill? Make sure your mailing address is up to date by completing our Change of Mailing Address form.


Email Consent forms and Change of Mailing Address forms can be submitted to the Municipal Office via the email at the bottom of the form, mail, or our 24 hour drop box location to the right of our front entrance. Visit the Taxation page on our website or contact the Finance Department for more information.


Did you know...

when you make a property tax payment through your online banking it can take two to seven business days for the Township to receive your payment? Make sure to plan ahead for your payments and allow a few days of processing time by the Banks before the tax due date! 


To pay your taxes through online banking, search for "North Kawartha Township - Tax" under the payee list and enter the first 15 digits of your roll number as the account number. When you pay through online banking your payment is automatically applied to the tax roll account that was entered when the payment was set up, so if you have more than one roll number make sure to set up an account for each property!

Welcome Aboard!

Introducing North Kawartha's newest team members

The Township of North Kawartha is excited to welcome Edward Hilton as the new Economic

Development Officer. Edward brings extensive experience from his role in the City of Kawartha Lakes, where he collaborated with over 150 businesses and community organizations. He holds a Bachelor of Independent Studies from the University of Waterloo, a Diploma in Urban Land Economics from UBC, along with certifications in finance, conflict management, and entrepreneurial skills. He has also volunteered in numerous community roles such as treasurer for the Appraisal Institute of Canada, Board Chair and Board Member of the Lindsay Downtown Revitalization Interim Community Group and Board Member of the Agricultural Development Advisory Board in Kawartha Lakes. Edward will be responsible for planning and facilitating community and economic initiatives.


On June 4, 2024, the North Kawartha Council approved a revised organization chart, separating the Planning Department from the Building and By-law Department. The new Planning Department will be managed by Darryl Tighe, reporting directly to Alana Solman, CAO.

Darryl Tighe, M.S.C, RPP is no stranger to the Township of North Kawartha, providing planning services to the Township in the past as a consultant. Darryl is an extremely qualified Registered Professional Planning, holding a 25 Year Membership Certificate with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute and holds a Master of Science (Physical Geography), Rural Planning and Development from the University of Guelph. Darryl will be responsible for the processing and staff recommendations on all planning and development applications, short-term planning, implementation of long-term planning policies and any other matters related to the comprehensive and orderly land-use development in North Kawartha Township. This role provides information and advice to Council, staff and the community related to land-use planning and zoning by-laws.


Additionally, we welcome Emily Fitzgerald as the new Junior Planner who will be reporting to the Manager of Planning. Emily, a University of Waterloo graduate with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies, Honours Co-operative Planning, will be responsible for processing and providing staff recommendations on all planning and development applications, as well as addressing short-term and long-term planning, along with any other matters related to the comprehensive and orderly land-use development within the Township of North Kawartha.  Her experience in consulting work in Peterborough and the Kawarthas has equipped her with a solid foundation in land use planning.

Parks and Recreation

Active and Upcoming Programs

Summer is in full swing, and Parks and Recreation is buzzing with activity! Youth sports like Basketball, Lacrosse, Ball Hockey, and Soccer have wrapped up a fantastic season. Now, it's time for exciting summer programs.


Starting July 2, 2024, youth can join the fun with three-pitch softball running until August 20, 2024. Additionally, swimming programs for youths ages 3 to 18, as part of the Lifesaving Society's accredited programs, will be offered again this year at Chandos BeachQuarry Bay Beach and on Jack Lake, at Anchorage Marina (1031 Jack Lake Road).


For adults, Tennis, Pickleball, Ping Pong, and Bridge are returning for the summer months. 

As the summer heat arrives, the North Kawartha Community Centre (NKCC) is gearing up for ice-skating season! Public skating returns on Labour Day weekend, August 31, 2024, running daily from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Stay tuned to North Kawartha’s social media for announcements on free public skating dates.


Get ready for another fantastic year on the ice with the North Kawartha Figure Skating Club's annual boot camp, happening from September 3, 2024 to September 8, 2024. But that's not all! Keep an eye out for more skating opportunities, hockey schools, skill development sessions, and other exciting ice activities at the North Kawartha Community Centre. Stay cool and get ready to glide!

Here's a roundup of exciting events happening in North Kawartha this Summer and early Fall:


Apsley & Area Artisan Festival

Kick off your summer with creativity on June 29, 2024, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the North Kawartha Community Centre (NKCC). Explore local talent and handmade crafts, sure to delight all ages.


Apsley Lions Club Canada Day Parade and Celebrations

Join the festivities on July 1st! The parade starts at 4:00 pm at Apsley Public School, travels along Burleigh Street, and finishes at the North Kawartha Community Centre (NKCC). The celebration continues at the NKCC until 6:00 pm, with fireworks at dusk to cap off the evening.


Apsley Lions Club Giant Flea Market

Discover treasures at the Giant Flea Market on July 20 - 21, 2024, the third Saturday and Sunday in July at the North Kawartha Community Centre (NKCC). From antiques to crafts, there's something for everyone. Stoney Lake Sprint Race

Jack Lake Film Festival (JLFF)

Lights, camera, action! Get ready for the Jack Lake Film Festival in association with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), a cinematic celebration happening the last weekend of August from August 19 to August 31, 2024. Stay tuned to their webpage for further details.


Creekside Music Festival

Join in for a weekend of music, community, and fun at the Creekside Music Festival on September 13 - 14 2024. The festival supports local artisans, musicians, food vendors, and community organizations. Stay updated on the Creekside website for details.

Recycling Blue Box Program Update

Circular Materials and Emterra Environmental

Did you know that Peterborough County is no longer managing blue box collection?


As Ontario moves to producer responsibility for recycling, an organization called Circular Materials now manages the blue box programs and they have hired Emterra Environmental as the collector, however North Kawartha residents should not notice any changes to your curbside recycling blue box collection. Emterra Environmental is responsible for curbside recycling collection, providing residents with new blue boxes, and all recycling inquiries, including missed curbside collection.

Essential Fire Safety Tips for Natural Disasters!

Natural disasters can have a devastating effect on you and your home. Use the following safety tips to help protect yourself, your family and your home from the potential threat of fire during or after a summer storm. You can greatly reduce your chances of becoming a fire casualty by being able to identify potential hazards and following the outlined safety tips.


Summer Storm Fire Hazards

  • Lightning associated with thunderstorms generates a variety of fire hazards. The power of lightning's electrical charge and intense heat can electrocute on contact, splitting trees and causing fires.
  • Pools of water and even appliances can be electrically charged.
  • Appliances that have been exposed to water can short and become a fire hazard.
  • Generators are often used during power outages. Generators that are not properly used and maintained can be very hazardous.

Roads Department Update

What's happening on North Kawartha roads this summer?

The Roads Department has several exciting updates and projects underway this summer:


Gravel Spreading Program

Starting in mid-June, the annual gravel spreading program is in full swing across North Kawartha. This includes:

  • Eels Lake Road
  • Warners Road
  • Knox Point Road
  • Doc Evans Road
  • Moffat Road
  • Lakeview Road


5-Year Surface Treatment Plan

The newly approved Township 5-Year Surface Treatment Plan has begun. Current construction includes:

  • Coon Lake Road
  • Don Wilson Road
  • A portion of Big Cedar Road
  • Dunfords Road

In July, these roads will receive a double surface treatment application.


Big Cedar Road Maintenance

  • Ditch maintenance and culvert replacement are in progress to prepare for next year's surface treatment.


Vegetation Trimming

  • The Roads Department's new Boom Mower will trim vegetation after the migratory bird nesting season.


Ongoing Maintenance

  • Routine roadway ditch maintenance will continue throughout the summer.
  • Roadway line painting will be promptly conducted on roads with existing lines.


Safety Reminder

Please proceed with caution when encountering North Kawartha staff on the roads.


Eels Creek Bridge Reconstruction

It was announced that Bellai Alliance Civil Inc. will conduct reconstruction works along Highway 28 Right-of-Way at the Eels Creek Bridge located at the Eels Creek Rest Area (approximately 13.3 km North of Burleigh Falls) from June 3, 2024, to August 2025.

The bridge replacement will occur in two stages with one lane open at all times, controlled by temporary traffic signals, and a winter shutdown between December 2024 and May 2025.

Council Meetings

Council and Committee meetings are being held hybrid format to accommodate both in-person attendees and remote meeting participants. A hybrid meeting format allows members of Council, Committees, staff, delegates, and the public to participate in meetings from within the Council Chambers at the Municipal Office, or virtually or by phone from a remote location.

 

Current meeting Agendas are available for public viewing on the Township website and include a link to join the meeting virtually and a phone number to join the meeting by phone.


Council and Committee meetings are recorded and posted on the Township's YouTube channel after the meeting for public viewing.


All meetings are open to the public, unless closed to deal with matters as set out in Section 239 of the Municipal Act.



Committee of Adjustment meetings are held the first and third Tuesday of each month, as may be required.


Short Term Rental Advisory Committee (STRAC) meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month.

Summer Swimming Programs

Registration Open now!

Swimming instruction for youths aged 3 to 18, as part of the Lifesaving Society’s accredited programs, will be offered again this year at Chandos Beach, Quarry Bay Beach, and on Jack Lake, at the Anchorage Marina (1031 Jack Lake Road).


Swim Lessons are 30 minutes in length. Lifesaving Society Bronze Program lessons are 45 to 60 minutes in length.

MPAC Assessment Update

The 2020 MPAC (Municipal Property Assessment Corporation) Assessment update for all Ontario properties has been postponed until further notice due to COVID-19. Property assessments for the 2024 property tax year will continue to be based on the fully phased-in current values, unless there have been any additional changes to your property. For more information, please contact MPAC at www.mpac.ca or 1-866-296-6722.


If you receive a Property Assessment Change Notice from MPAC due to physical changes to your property you can visit www.mpac.ca where you can log on to AboutMyProperty to:

  • Learn more about how your property was assessed,
  • See the information they have on file about your property, and
