The official newsletter for volunteers of the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum

April 2024

April is National Volunteer Month - a time to thank volunteers for your contributions of time and talent. You are an awesome team to work with, and you take us so much farther than we could ever go on our own. Your support makes the museum mission!

The Navy museums have teamed up to show our collective appreciation by offering you five gatherings to learn about a different Navy museum and their subject areas on the five Tuesdays in April. See details below!

Our consortia of regional museums is still finalizing details for the reciprocal admissions program for National Volunteer Week April 21-27. I'll share the details as soon as I have them - watch your inbox and the museum front desk! And in the meantime, save some time during that week to take advantage of this great volunteer benefit! — Mary Rogers, Volunteer and Events Coordinator

Every Tuesday in April - Learn about a Navy Museum! Presentations at 10am on Zoom

In celebration of National Volunteer Month, Navy museum volunteers are invited to special presentations on Tuesdays in April 2024 that will highlight artifacts, exhibits, and programs at the Navy’s museums.

On each Tuesday in April 2024, at 1000 Pacific Time, join the Zoom session to hear about these special topics and meet/greet volunteers from other Navy museums. Each presentation will run 60-90 minutes to include a Q&A session. Join each Zoom Meeting (virtual only, no onsite location) with this same link: https://zoom.us/j/98302071565?pwd=VWVMaWNUNlUwYzRVZ0l3ZHoydTZDZz09 I'll send a reminder the morning of each program.

April 2, 2024: History of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS&IMF), Megan Churchwell, Curator, Puget Sound Navy Museum (PSNM). Explore 130 years of Shipyard history, from its 1891 founding through the pivotal World War II years and continuing through its groundbreaking work on nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.

April 9, 2024: Heroism and Heartache: USS Cumberland’s Last Stand at Hampton Roads, John Pentangelo, Director, Hampton Roads Naval Museum (HRNM). Launched as a frigate in 1842 and later converted to a sloop-of-war, USS Cumberland fought at the Battle of Hampton Roads during the American Civil War. Most people know this battle for the famous duel between the ironclads USS Monitor and CSS Virginia on March 9, 1862. But on March 8, Virginia destroyed both USS Cumberland and USS Congress, leading to the U.S. Navy’s worst defeat since its origins in 1775. This discussion will focus on Cumberland’s sinking, the crew’s response to the attack, public memory of the ordeal, and the recovery of artifacts from the wreck.

April 16, 2024: Marine Mammals: The Navy's Super Searchers, Mary Ryan, Curator, U.S. Naval Undersea Museum (USNUM). The Navy’s highly trained dolphins and sea lions carry out missions all over the world. With their natural acoustic, sight, and diving abilities, marine mammals are exceptionally skilled at finding objects underwater. Navy animals detect mines and intruders in a fraction of the time it takes human divers and human-made technology. This presentation, based on our popular exhibit, explores the missions Navy dolphins and sea lions perform and the science behind their remarkable abilities.

April 23, 2024: Back to Boot Camp, Tricia Menke, Curator of Education, National Museum of the American Sailor (NMAS). NMAS is taking you back to boot camp! This tour will share the museum's "From to Civilian to Sailor: The Professionalization of the U.S. Navy" exhibition. Attendees will hear about the components that make up a uniform, take a peek at Navy food, go back in time and see the dreaded boot camp "Coffin Rack," and get an in-depth look at the 10 weeks of boot camp. As an added bonus NMAS will be unveiling their brand new "Rate and Rating" interactive!

April 30, 2024: Building the New National Museum of the U.S. Navy (NMUSN), Dr. Chris Rentfrow, Director, Navy Museums Division, Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC). Hear about the activities of the museum professionals who make up the NMUSN Campus Program Office, and what they’re doing to be ready to design and build an entirely new museum.

***NOTE! Please report your time participating as "Training >> In-Person or Virtual Scheduled Training" volunteer time. Registration not required but you can add the sessions to your calendar in MyImpact. — Mary Rogers, Volunteer and Events Coordinator
