Community Action Month 2024

celebrates 60 years of service

Happy 60th Anniversary Community Action! May 2024 marks the anniversary of the community action movement which began in 1964 with the signing of the Civil Rights Act and the Economic Opportunity Act. Both were key pieces of civil rights legislation that led to the establishment of Community Action Agencies throughout the United States. During the month of May, EBCAP will join with other local and regional CAP agencies to raise awareness of the contributions and achievements of Community Action.

While EBCAP joins in commemorating Community Action’s 60th Anniversary, we are very much looking forward to celebrating our very own 60th Anniversary in 2025. More details will follow as plans get underway to celebrate EBCAP’s anniversary in 2025.

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. EBCAP is pleased to join the national movement to raise awareness by supporting, educating, and advocating for the mental health and well-being of our friends, family, and community.

Throughout the month of May, EBCAP’s Behavioral Health services will present seven in-house trainings that are open to agency staff.

HFA is the signature program of PCA America and has been providing home visiting services for nearly 30 years. Expectant and new parents are facing new stressors and have questions about their child’s development. HFA connects with families through community partners like hospitals and pediatricians to support parents, meeting within the familiarity and convenience of the family’s own home. HFA is an accessible, voluntary, and well-received service.

This is the highest rating that licensed childcare programs can receive in the state. Both centers provide early childhood education services to children ages 3 to 5. Congratulations to our dedicated Head Start staff on this enormous achievement!

Head Start is now enrolling children ages 3-5, as well as pregnant parents, for the 2024-2025 school year. We offer both center-based and home-based services. To learn more and to apply, visit www.ebcap.org.

Day of giving unites Rhode Islanders in support of state's non-profits

On April 1, 2024, EBCAP participated in the 5th annual 401Gives, powered by United Way of Rhode Island. Funds raised by EBCAP during this 24-hour online event benefitted the Backpack Feeding Program, which is managed by EBCAP’s Newport Family and Child Opportunity Zone at Pell Elementary School in Newport. This program provides easy to heat and eat take-home meals for children to have on the weekends when food can be scarce.

We would like to extend a big thank you to all who donated and helped us in spreading the word. Your support means the world to families in need.

The grand totals from the entire 401Gives event are astounding!

Funds raised: $3,849,226

Number of donors: 16,646

Number of non-profits that raised funds: 597

WOW! The power of community is unmatched. Kudos to United Way of Rhode Island on another extraordinary event!

United States Coast Guard members volunteer at EBCAP

Recently, while they were in port at the Newport Navy Base, 12 members from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutters Tahoma and Oak volunteered at EBCAP's food pantry and Head Start program.

"It was great to meet and accept the help from this kind, friendly, and hard-working group. From receiving a large delivery and cleaning and stocking shelves in our food pantry to happily reading picture books to our Head Start children, their assistance was very much appreciated," said Maggie Laurianno, Director of Communications and Development. Thank you Tahoma and Oak Coast Guard members! You make an important difference in everything you do.
