Columbus Football Facts:

"In 1916, Columbus held our first Auburn-Georgia game! 38 games were played in Columbus in A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

The games continued in Columbus through 1958, although the teams didn't play in 1917 or 1918 because of World War I or in 1943, because of World War II. The 1929 game was played in Athens.

The Georgia-Auburn game had become an intense rivalry and was getting too big for the Columbus stadium, which still seats only 15,000. Officials at both schools wanted to use that game to justify enlarging their own stadiums. So the presidents agreed to make the game a home and home series."
