As a senior at Bais Yaakov last Fall, Rachel Yasnyi learned about the Big Brother Big Sister program and felt she would enjoy becoming a Big Sister because it was “the right thing to do.” After meeting with a now rising 10th grader at Bais Yaakov, her mother and JCS Match Coordinator Jen Rudo, Rachel, and her “Little” were matched and began meeting about three times each month.
The two soon discovered that they “both like to eat,” so going together to the café at JCC was a good choice. They engage in “real conversations about family and friends;” Rachel says her “Little” is “a good people-person, she’s fun and funny.” Rachel finds it helpful that their school backgrounds are similar.
The girls compare notes on what they will do after high school. Rachel graduated in June and will spend a year in Israel. She will then attend college in the U.S. where she plans to major in architecture.
By becoming a Big Sister, Rachel says she has made a new friend and enjoys keeping in touch with staff about the relationship. She plans to call and text her “Little” during her year in Israel and will continue their visits when she returns.
