Hello all,
The year seems to be flying by at a furious pace with March being just a couple of days away. But any pace that helps us get back to warmer weather quickly is welcomed!
With this edition of the District 4 Newsletter, I wanted to take a few minutes to share the latest information from VDOT regarding local projects that may be of interest to you. Over the next few weeks/months, VDOT is planning to:
- Begin the Route 134 Bridge rehabilitation over Route 17. This project will replace the bridge deck and approach slabs. It will also make minor repairs to the superstructure and substructure of the existing bridge on Route 134 (Magruder Blvd) over Route 17. The northbound traffic lane of the Route 134 bridge will be temporarily closed during construction and traffic will be detoured to Route 17 South via Victory Blvd. A temporary median crossover on the approach roadways will be provided to maintain southbound traffic on Route 134 during both phases of construction. While the start date for this project isn’t planned until October (completion in September of 2026), given the potential impact this could have for many people in our area, I wanted to get it on everyone’s radar early.
- Widen Victory Boulevard from 5 to 6 lanes between Route 17 and Route 134. This is scheduled to begin in July of this year with a targeted completion about 12 months later.
- For those of us who travel on I-64 towards Richmond, the I-64 Gap Segment C Widening Project is scheduled to begin this spring with completion scheduled for fall of 2027. This will include the addition of one general purpose lane on I-64 east and west from the New Kent/James City County line to approximately 1.15 miles west of Route 199 (exit 234). This project will be the second of three “Gap” segments that will widen I-64 from four to six lanes from New Kent County (mile marker 204.9) to James City County (mile marker 233.3). The proposed widening will take place in the median of I-64 within the existing right-of-way.
- Safety Review for Patrick’s Creek Road - The speed limit for the road was determined to be a statutory 55/45MPH as outlined in §46.2-870 of the Code of Virginia. However, this road meets the criteria defined as a Residence District per §46.2-100 of the Code of Virginia which has 2,640 feet of residential dwellings and land improved for dwelling purpose. In addition, Olivia Court is defined as a residence district as well. Therefore, pursuant to §46.2-874 of the Code of Virginia, entitled maximum speed limit in business and residence districts, VDOT Traffic Engineering recommends each route be given a statutory speed limit of 25MPH. A SPEED LIMIT 25 sign is in place on the east end of Patrick’s Creek Road, a work order will be submitted to VDOT Regional Operations Installation and Maintenance to schedule the installation of an additional SPEED LIMIT 25 on the west end.
- Repaving plans around District 4:
- Route 17 from Wolf Trap Road to Fort Eustis Blvd.
- Charles Road starting at Yorkville Road
- Numerous roads in Tabbs Lake for those that visit the subdivision
- When I last spoke with our local VDOT maintenance team, their supervisor told me they are still planning to continue the ditch rehabilitation projects they began last year. So, if you noticed some of the ditches in your neighborhood were cleaned out last year, be on the lookout for them to return to finish the work sometime later this year.
- I spoke with our regional VDOT coordinator and asked him to look into the following for us:
- Shoulder repair/rehabilitation on Old Lakeside Drive
- Shoulder repair and drainage on Railway Drive
- Road repair at the CSX railroad crossing on Old York-Hampton Highway. However, I learned that this is out-of-scope for VDOT and it is something that CSX would need to address. So, we are attempting to make contact with the correct department within CSX to ask that they look into repair options.
More information and details about upcoming VDOT projects can be found at: VDOT Quarterly Report - February 2024 (yorkcounty.gov). This includes some projects scheduled with start dates in 2025 and 2026. Also, you can find additional road-related information on our VDOT Portal.
Best regards,
Stephen
