Get the Lowdown with Dr. Lowe

York Academy Families:

We completed our third day of school, and it is outstanding to have our students back at the York Academy. I continue to see a number of our families parking at Small's Field and walking students to both schools. Keep up the good work.

Be on the lookout for our many announcements. They will be shared in a variety of ways - from teachers, through all school emails and calls, in this weekly newsletter and on Facebook and Instagram. Please check your spam folder to make sure you are receiving emails. The first PTO meeting and both Back to School Nights are happening next week, and many exciting things are on the horizon.

So far, 479 families have completed the online New School Year Information Form. Parents, you are rocking this! Haven't completed it yet? The deadline is Friday, so fill it out tonight. The details you provide are for safety purposes because we must have this information on file for every student (K-12). Make sure to fill out the form for each of your children. Please give me the gift of having 100% participation by Friday!

As always, thanks for all you do and enjoy your evening.

Parents & Guardians: Join Us for Back to School Night(s)

York Academy parents and guardians are invited to our Back to School Nights next week!

Due to space and time limits, these events are just for parents and guardians (students do not come). Please make plans for childcare now.

Upper School (7-12): Wednesday, August 21 from 5:30 - 7 p.m.

Find out how being an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School sets York Academy apart, and the ways our Upper School educators integrate lessons, learner profiles, and global issues to develop knowledgeable, ambitious, caring and principled global citizens. You will also learn about important policies and expectations, get to meet your student's teachers, visit classrooms and ask questions. Please enter through the main doors.

Lower School (K-6): Thursday, August 22 from 5:30 - 7 p.m.

Learn how the International Baccalaureate (IB) is unique because your student(s) learn skills and concepts across all subject areas, rather than during specific blocks of time (for math, science, etc.). You'll hear from teachers, administration, PTO officers, and department/program leaders. Meet your child's teacher(s), speak to PTO volunteers about getting involved, visit the school Uniform Swap, gather community-based information, and more! Please enter the building through the playground gate and doors.

The partnership we share with our parents is extremely important, and we look forward to connecting with you and learning how we can support your student(s). It's going to be a great year!

Alumni Spotlight: Ezequiel Adames

Congrats to York Academy graduate and Penn State York student, Ezequiel Adames. Last month he participated in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference and won first place in the Marketing, Sales and Communication Case Category! Ezequiel is a biology major and the first freshman to win a national award.

"It was an incredible experience to mentor, teach and lead him through the process - especially seeing him discover his confidence and potential firsthand," said Professor Megan Lorenz (above).

FBLA prepares students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through career preparation and leadership experiences. Our Upper School FBLA Club is back this year, so watch for details!

Lower School Pickup Passes Will Be Available Next Week

Are you a Lower School parent/guardian who plans to pick up your student(s) every day? You will need to sign up for a Pickup Pass. Stop by the office (8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.) starting Monday.

If someone else (ex. family member, friend, babysitter) will pick up your student(s) in the future, they will need a Pickup Pass, too. Forward this email or tell them.

To save time, print the Pickup Contract here and bring it along. Paper copies will also be available. Had a pass last year? Since the numbers have changed, you must sign up again.

For safety reasons, anyone without a Pickup Pass will not be permitted to pick up students. Click here to review the Pickup Procedures and watch this video (Spanish) for more information.

You're Invited to Our First PTO Meeting on Tuesday

Interested in making a difference at York Academy? You're invited to the first PTO meeting on Tuesday (8/20) at 6 p.m. in the Lower School Media Center. Come find out what exciting things are in the works to support our families and teachers/staff.

Make sure to follow the PTO on Facebook and learn more here. Questions? Email MaryRose Ritter, our PTO President. Everyone is welcome, and we hope to see you on Tuesday!

Parent/Student Chromebook Agreement (K-12)

The York Academy believes that access to technology is vital to enhancing students' learning opportunities in a global environment. Each student will receive a Chromebook for educational purposes.

All students (K-12) are required to sign the Parent/Student Chromebook Agreement in MySchoolBucks. You may print it (below) and send it to school, as well. Students are responsible for their devices and must take care of them.

Upper School students may take their Chromebooks home to complete work after they sign the policy. Lower School students will keep their devices at school, unless directed otherwise.

Students (K-12) have the option to purchase a Device Protection Plan for $30, which covers up to two incidents of accidental damage per school year. Cases and other hardware are not covered. The prices are listed in the agreements.

Please note that students who do not take advantage of the Device Protection Plan will be responsible for the full cost of repairs or replacement of the device (damage/loss).

Sunday Deadline: Uniform and Spirit Wear Store

Did you know that the YARCS Uniform & Spirit Wear Store is open all year on a rolling basis? The next deadline is this Sunday (8/18). Orders will be delivered about four weeks later, and we'll be in touch when they arrive.

Upper School students (7-12) are required to wear a specific t-shirt and black athletic shorts for gym class. The t-shirt is available in the store for $10. You are welcome to purchase the black shorts shown with the t-shirt, but it is not required. Students may wear any school-appropriate black shorts.

Please Note: Items in the Spirit Wear section are not part of the York Academy uniform and may not be worn to school unless it's a designated PTO (or other) Dress Down Day. Need a dress code refresher, click below.
