Yom Kippur Brauchot
Tzom Kal - May You Have A Easy Fast
Greetings!

A Very blessed Shana Tova to all of you!

We are into a new year and so may Ha Shem's blessings extend to you and yours!                            .Grace at Kotel

These special days of Awe offer inspiration and also a solemn time of reflection on our lives.  Have we been as kind as we should have been to our fellow man?  Have we taken the time to really "listen" to the other person who was hurting or asking for help?  Have we cut off people from our lives, because we disagreed with them?  How is our heart measuring up to the expectations of his holy Torah, in our daily lives?

Yom Kippur commemorates  the day that HaShem forgave the Jewish people for the sin of the Golden Calf.  Israel committed the cardinal sin of idolatry, just forty days after hearing HaShem say at Mount Sinai: "You shall not have the gods of others in My presence; you shall not make for yourself a graven image".
.Shavuot MountainHow easily did our forefathers forget the thundering on the mountain , yet what a lesson this is for us, who have the same nature of "forgetting" his mitzvot in our lives also so readily?

After spending almost three month's pleading with HaShem for forgiveness on behalf of Israel, Moshe finally heard the words on the tenth of Tishrei,  "I have pardoned, as you have requested."

During this solemn time, we focus on letting go of the physical and spend much of our day in the synagogue, engaged in repentance and prayer. We commemorate by a "fast of affliction"...from sundown to sundown, refraining from food and drink  to ask for Ha Shem's mercy on our people.  May Ha Shem give you an easy fast.
                                           .

The Kol Nidre Prayer During Yom Kippur

The Kol Nidrei prayer,  begins the Yom Kippur evening service, and evokes for us the memory of our converso Jewish ancestors,  during the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition and expulsion.  Its origins date to this 15th century time and remain in use still today.

Praying During Yom Kippur

The Kol Nidrei, or "all vows", is the prayer that was created to allow for all Jews to pray together on this solemn day for over 500 years.   In the Kol Nidrei prayer, we state that we are permitted to pray together with all of those Jews who have transgressed and even fallen away from the Torah's practices and values. We remember all of the dark periods of Jewish life over our long exile - the persecutions and forced conversions, the auto-de-fes and the crypto-Jews forced to practice their faith hiding in dark cellars, lighting candles behind closed windows  and doors.

Yom Kippur comes to remind us not to write off any of our fellow Jews. There will come another generation of return and restoration. Yom Kippur reminds me of my beloved namesake, Doa Gracia Beatrice Mendez (Hannah Nasi) and Rabbi Menashe ben Yisrael. Both of these conversos rose to become leaders of Israel and defenders of Jews and Judaism during such a dark time in history.
