Yet It Was Not Consumed
by Father Ted
If I had to choose one thing that surprised me the most from our recent choir trip to Scotland, it would be that I spent a lot more time thinking about Presbyterianism than I normally do. We walked through a dozen or more churches that had their roots in the old, catholic church of western Europe, but which have been part of the Church of Scotland, which is Presbyterian, since the Scottish Reformation. During that period, many old catholic churches were torn down and their stones repurposed, since they didn’t fit the piety and liturgical needs of Scottish Calvinists. The ones that managed to survive only did so because (and we heard this a lot) John Knox preached there.
Early in the trip, we visited the small city of Perth, a medieval trading post with roots going back to prehistoric Britain. Because of its strategic location, it served as Scotland’s capital for a time. At the center of the city is St. John’s Kirk, a church dedicated to John the Baptist built on a site where Christians have worshipped since the twelfth century. The current structure was built around 1488. Like all the other old churches we toured, it survived the reformation because John Knox preached there once upon a time.
Looking around the church, I noticed a beautiful, wooden lectern. On the desk there was an array of hand-carved thistles with the words...

Sound Technician Training Saturday
|
We eagerly seek new sound technicians to help at our three weekend services. If you are interested in learning more and being trained, we invite you to join us tomorrow, Saturday, July 27 at 10:00am to explore the new Roper Hall sound system. This special meeting will provide valuable insights for both current and prospective team members. This ministry ensures that everyone hears and enjoys all of our services in person and online.
Your Last Chance to Take the Survey
On July 29, the Bishop Search Survey will end but there is still time for you to share your hopes and perspectives with the Bishop Search Committee. Your opinion is important to the Diocese and to Transfiguration!
The survey takes less than 20 minutes but must be taken in one sitting. You can take it on any device, but we recommend one with a larger screen such as a computer or tablet. Contact Cathleen Dolt with any questions.

Join a Foyer Group
It’s time to organize the Fall Foyer Groups for 2024. The Foyer ministry brings together small groups of 6-10 people to host meals, share in fellowship, and is an excellent way to meet people here at Transfiguration! We will gather to reveal the randomly sorted groups on Sunday, August 18 from 4:00pm - 6:00pm in the Parlor. Bring a snack to share and your choice of beverage. If you would like to participate or if you have questions about Foyer Groups, we want to hear from you.

An Easy Way to Help
One of the ways our church serves the homeless is through the little pantry which is on the right of the church doors. You can help us keep it stocked.
Items to contribute: Food that can be eaten walking away from the pantry such as cans with pull-tops, easy-to-eat proteins, water, non-perishable fruit and veggies. Just drop your contributions in the brown basket near the name tag board.
You can also assist with our efforts by volunteering to be responsible for checking and adding items to the little pantry one weekend each quarter.

Keeping Up with Mother Rebecca
Oregon, Covid, and Aggies
Our intrepid Mother Rebecca continues her sabbatical. She enjoyed time with friends in Oregon which she described as a blast. Returning home she brought back a souvenir of the trip, Covid. Luckily it was a quick recovery in time to share in Owen's orientation at Texas A&M. In true Mother Rebeccas fashion she wrapped it all up by cycling around the Dallas area.

St Hilda’s sounds like an “old” name for a group selling contemporary clothes and books, and it is! St Hilda was a saint born in 614 AD. She was the founding abbess of the monastery at Whitby England. She ran two abbey’s, and discovered and sponsored the first English poet and educated five bishops. St Hilda was an advocate of equal rights for women and compassion for others. Her namesake has longevity as does St Hilda’s Clothes Horse and bookstore at Transfiguration. St Hilda’s mission is helping women and children, and helping with special needs of the church. We accomplish this by working and making money to give. You can help St. Hilda's continue their ministry by supporting their outreach endeavors below:
