Every year at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, we adapt a school theme that shapes our conversations, curriculum, and creativity for the year. This past school year's theme -- "The Legacy Continues..." -- reflected our aim to build on the previous year's achievements, while remaining true to our mission to nurture and inspire passion for arts and learning in talented students who might not otherwise have an opportunity to develop their artistic skills. The achievements of the Class of 2016 are a true testament to the importance of the well-rounded education we provide -- 98% of our seniors graduated, 97% were accepted to college, and the class earned a cumulative total of $12.4 million in scholarships.

Our Summer Newsletter has highlights from the 2015-2016 school-year, including an excerpt from the valedictorian address given by Jordan Harris.

Ellington's Show Band, Radical Elite, performing at the SoundExchange event featuring Trombone Shorty.

On June 23rd, SoundExchange hosted a celebration of music education headlined by Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, with all proceeds benefiting the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.  Ellington's Show Band, Radical Elite, performed and impressed everyone at the event, including Trombone Shorty. We look forward to strengthening our new partnership with SoundExchange and hope to have to have similar collaborations in the future.

A fter going through a rigorous application process, several Ellington students were selected to participate in the inaugural  DCPS Global Education Study Abroad Summer Program. This program funded by the DC Education Fund has allowed for 400 8th and 11th graders to travel to 14 different countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, Central and South America. Ellington is proud to have 20 of our 11th graders representing the school in countries including Senegal, Belgium, Spain, The Netherlands, France, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, the Galapagos, Costa Rica, Argentina, Uruguay, and Peru. Trips have focused on service learning, language immersion or educational tours. Each student will be creating a "Making Global Local" Project that will be shared with everyone in the fall.

Ellington's Director of Admissions, Savannah Overton, led a group that included four Ellington students on a trip to Peru to discover culture, service and art in Lima and Cusco. During their nine-day trip,  students painted ceramics and designed and painted a mural on a van as part of their service learning experience at Yachay Wasi preschool in Ollantaytambo, an Incan archeological site at 9,000 feet. One of the major highlights of the trip was hiking to the top of Machu Picchu. This, and the other DCPS study abroad trips, will truly be an experience that students will never forget.
