A Message from the Principal

Dear Yasuhara Phoenix,

Happy May! Welcome to the last full month of the 2023-2024 school year. We're so excited about all great things happening this month. Spring sports have officially begun! Check our website for the game and meet schedule. We're happy to announce that we're running intramurals for our 6th grade students. Currently, we offer basketball for all 6th grade students, and in the next couple of weeks, we'll add soccer club and pickleball club. If your child is interested in participating in these sports, please have them stop by our front office to get a permission slip.

Springtime also means state testing. Our students just finished MAP testing and have begun SBAC testing. We appreciate your help to ensure your students gets a good night's sleep and come to school with their computer charged and ready to go. It truly takes all of us to help our students successfully demonstrate everything they've learned this year! Thank you for all you do. As usual, please feel free to call or stop by if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Lundberg

Floodscapes & Ice Ages

Konshuk's ELA and Social Studies classes traveled to Dry Falls to learn more about the Floodscapes of the many Ice Ages for Washington State History. Our class traveled two-hours to meet with Ranger McWalter. When we stepped off the bus the view was amazing. We could see the cliffs that had been torn away by the floods to shape our landscape.

After we took some great pictures, Ranger McWalter led us out of the biting cold wind into the visitor center to learn more about J. Harlen Bretz and how geologists know about the history of the land. We watched a couple of videos of what the floods may have looked like, too.

Afterward we went down to learn more about the Sun Lakes State Park. We learned about the trees and plants around us as we ate lunch. Then we piled back into the bus for a great ride along Highway 2, imagining the whole area filled with waters of Glacial Lake Columbia. Makes you see your world a little differently. Next stop is Grand Coulee Dam.

Spanish Class Navigation

Do you speak Spanish and need help getting around town? Look no further! Yasuhara students can help. We have New Comers from Spanish speaking countries here at Yasuhara and they visited our classroom and did a great job helping students give directions around town. Are our kids ready to drive around a Spanish speaking city? Maybe not today, but they will be soon!

First year Spanish students loved practicing where things are located around the house using Legos. This very active class is doing great listening to and speaking about things in and around the home.

Our Phoenix Spanish students amaze me daily and I'm so proud of them. Keep it up Phoenix students!

Congratulations, Esther Mutono!

Esther Mutono was honored April 23rd by the Chase Youth Commission, who honors our community's outstanding youth, teens, and adults who make a difference in our community or make positive choices.

Esther took home the Middle School award for Personal Achievement. Well done, Esther! We're proud you are a phoenix.

The YAS Student Store Needs Your Help!

Our YAS student store is running low on supplies, and we would greatly appreciate any donations to keep it going for the remainder of the year. Students shop at the store using points they earn for being on-time, being prepared for class, doing good work, and cleaning up after themselves. This is an excellent incentive to keep students motivated and behaving to their potential.

Popular items include: small toys, fidget toys, make-up, hygiene supplies, games, puzzles, water bottles, stuffed animals, school supplies, stickers, snacks, candy, juice, and gum. Contact Cassie Costello to arrange a donation of gently used or new items for the student store: cassiec@spokaneschools.org or call 509.824.8218 .

End-of-Year Reminder

Please take a moment to evaluate your student's school supplies. Many students are low on pencils, pens, and lined paper--supplies they need to be successful at Yasuhara. With testing in May, it is crucial students have pencils in their backpacks.
