A Message from the Principal
Happy April, Yasuhara Families!
We're officially on the down hill sprint to the end of the year. I hope you enjoy your week off for spring break. It looks like the weather will cooperate and provide some much needed sunshine.
March was a busy month full of athletics, clubs, and academic celebrations. Our 7th and 8th grade basketball teams and wrestlers showed such growth and determination. We're so proud of how much they grew this season.Great job representing Yasuhara!
We're also happy to report that our students are finished with Spring MAP testing, a tremendous accomplishment. Our students worked hard to meet their projected growth scores for the year. After spring break we will complete SBAC assessments. During this time, we appreciate all the support you can provide from home by making sure your students get a full night of sleep and arrive at school on time. We will continue to strive to help our students grow and meet their goals. Please review the schedule under the "reminders" section of this newsletter, so you can help us prepare your child for success. Thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Stephanie Lundberg

The YAS Student Store Needs Your Help! | |
Our YAS student store is running low on supplies, and we would greatly appreciate any donations to keep it going for the remainder of the year. Students shop at the store using points they earn for being on-time, being prepared for class, doing good work, and cleaning up after themselves. This is an excellent incentive to keep students motivated and behaving to their potential.
Popular items include: small toys, fidget toys, make-up, hygiene supplies, games, puzzles, water bottles, stuffed animals, school supplies, stickers, snacks, candy, juice, and gum. Contact Cassie Costello to arrange a donation of gently used or new items for the student store: cassiec@spokaneschools.org or call 509.824.8218 .

Barkley's Bites
Chef Folse's Pork, Chicken and Andouille Jambalaya
|
Ingredients:
1 pound cubed pork butt
1 pound cubed chicken
1 pound sliced andouille
1/4 Cup vegetable oil
2 Cups diced onions
2 Cups diced bell peppers
1/4 Cup minced garlic
7 Cups chicken stock
2 Cups sliced mushrooms
1 Cup sliced green onions
1/2 Cup chopped parsley
Salt and black pepper to taste
Louisiana hot sauce to taste
4 Cups uncooked long grain rice
Instructions:
- In a 2-gallon cast iron dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat.
- Saute pork 30 minutes or until dark brown and all sides begin to stick to the bottom of the pot (this step is important as the brown color of jambalaya comes from the meat)
- Stir in chicken and andouille
- Reduce heat to medium and stir-fry 10-15 minutes
- Tilt pot to one side and ladle out all oil except one large cooking spoonful.
- Add onions, celery, bell peppers, and garlic.
- Cook until all vegetables are well caramelized (but do not scorch them)
- Pour in stock, bring to roiling boil, the reduce heat to simmer
- Cook 15 minutes to allow flavors to develop
- Stir in mushrooms, green onions, and parlsey
- Season with salt, pepper, and hot sauce. (If desired, you may slightly over-season the dish as rice has not be added yet.)
- Add rice and bring to a rolling boil.
- Reduce heat to very low, cover and cook 30 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes (do not uncover unless to stir).
- Stir when fully cooked, letting sit and steam for 10 minutes before serving.
