March 2024

Check out this youth-led service project that was sprearheaded by Carys,

a student at Hampton Roads Academy and an enthusiastic YVC member:

"I wanted to think of a project that would benefit the environment, help my school, and be an easy-access service project for the students. I started by applying for a mini grant through askHRgreen.org, which provides funding for environmental education projects in schools. So far members of our club have helped build the raised bed itself, and the club will plant flowers in the spring. Along with this, I plan to have mini-projects during our club YVC meetings, such as making recycled hummingbird feeders. I hope to be able to tie the Lower School and NAHS (an art club) into the project, as well, to make decorations. It has been a group effort that I couldn’t have done without Ms. Brownfiel and our club members. I didn’t even know how to use a drill or properly grow seeds when this started. I’ve loved learning new skills from my peers and am excited knowing I'm helping our YVC club leave a special legacy at HRA."

NOTE: We screen all adults whose volunteer duties involve direct interations with youth; YVCHR will initiate and pay for all background checks. Training is required for all new Team Leaders, and we abide by a strict Youth Protection Policy.

Calling all K-12 students! Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads is recruiting teams of elementary, middle and high school students to participate in this year’s Canstructure Competition, a STEM-inspired, team-based challenge that will help provide thousands of meals to local families experiencing food insecurity. Each year, this event activates youth from across our community to help address the issue of hunger while also providing an outlet for their creativity.

What is a CANstructure? A canstructure is a unique work of art that is created by collecting hundreds—sometimes thousands!—of canned food items, which are then used to design and build a 3-dimensional structure that relates to this year’s theme:

Connecting Worlds Through Literature!

How do teams compete? Teams will meet to plan and brainstorm their canstructure design and to determine their strategy for collecting canned food donations. Teams may conduct food drives, solicit donations from local businesses or raise funds to purchase the cans needed to build their structure. Once the team has acquired their “building materials,” they will sort, wrap and carefully stack the cans to create their canstructure. This year’s event will be a hybrid event where elementary teams will build their structures at their schools and high school teams will build their canstructures at Patrick Henry Mall on April 27, 2024. All teams are invited to attend the awards ceremony at center court @ 2:30pm. Winning teams will receive trophies…but best of all, thousands of pounds of food will be donated to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank!
