In our last newsletter, we introduced you to the Presidents of our Champion Club partners in Haiti.

This month we turn our focus to the international Champion District partners working hand in hand with their Haitian colleagues.

Get to know the District Governors who help guide these districts and their passion for service.

Kerry Anne Schultz - District Governor, District 6940– Champion for Pignon, Haiti

Kerry Anne became a part of Rotary International back in 2007 and has held various roles, including being a RYLA volunteer, District Conference Chair, Club President, and Area Governor. HANWASH is a cause close to her heart, as she deeply understands the critical importance of clean water for everyone. Through a global grant from The Rotary Foundation, collaborative efforts are underway to revamp the water system in Pignon in partnership with the Rotary Club of Pignon in the Northern part of Haiti.

This comprehensive project has an investment value of approximately $480,000 and involves establishing district-metered areas, transitioning from diesel to solar-powered systems, and integrating acoustic leak detection and remote monitoring features. Our District's leadership is fully dedicated to the success of both the Pignon commune and the broader HANWASH initiative. Beyond her involvement with HANWASH, Kerry is also engaged in projects in Kenya, Africa. She shares that “the District’s commitment to Africa is notable, as we support schools, orphanages, and provide essential equipment to medically underserved clinics and hospitals”. In addition, the clubs consistently make meaningful contributions to their local communities. Kerry's genuine spirit of service fuels her determination, and she eagerly anticipates continuing her impactful journey as District Governor.

Jeff Coil – District Governor, District 6290 – Champion for Terre-Neuve, Haiti

Jeff Coil's journey into Rotary was ignited by the organization's avenue for giving back and utilizing one's skills for meaningful contributions. Jeff commends HANWASH, characterizing it as an exceptionally well-operated organization. Jeff admires the “reach for the moon” approach HANWASH is taking on and aspires to do his part to help bring it to life. During interactions with Clubs, Jeff incorporates impactful tools to communicate HANWASH's message.

He often shares the compelling promo video featuring Jeremy Hurst, accompanied by images of Leogane, Haiti. Witnessing the profound impact of these visuals, he recounts instances where individuals were so moved that they wanted to get involved immediately.

Beyond his involvement with HANWASH, Jeff actively promotes the expansion of Rotary by encouraging members to bring someone new to a meeting. In addition, he passionately supports initiatives targeting youth welfare and mental health. Amidst his responsibilities, Jeff cherishes the moments of camaraderie shared with fellow Rotarians over shared meals at local restaurants, recognizing the importance of community in achieving his goals for the year. Eagerly, he looks forward to sustained engagement with HANWASH, understanding that collective effort and unity are pivotal for accomplishing his mission in partnership with the Rotary Club of Memorial des Gonaives, for the benefit of the citizens of Terre-Neuve, Haiti.

Marjolein Lloyd – District Governor, District 5060 - Champion for Ferrier, Haiti

Marjolein actively worked towards becoming a District Governor for years. Being the daughter of a long-time Rotarian and a member since the age of 22, giving back to the community has been a part of who she is from a very young age. Leadership training provided through her Rotary journey empowered her to become a Facilitator and helped build confidence. She learned very quickly that her passion is in facilitation and inspiring and motivating others to create positive change in their communities. When she arrives at a club, she doesn't tell them what she or the District expects of them; her job is not to tell them what to do in order for the District to meet its goals.

Marjolein sees herself as "the head cheerleader." No matter the size of the club, she tries to encourage the membership to pick a couple of things that they are passionate about, and do those things but do them well! Her job is to provide resources, encouragement and to let them know about amazing opportunities throughout their beautiful District. Marjolein believes it is critical that D5060 build on continuity throughout its activities. This includes the leadership team, District committees and many of its programs. Above all of that, however, she is thrilled to hear that clubs are building stronger teams, having more and more fun and are Creating Hope in THEIR World. Marjolein says "The thing you want to know about her is that I’m an open book. I love to learn, I love people, and I love Rotary. I probably sound like an after school special, but Rotary is my therapy. I would like to think that I try to be better each and every day and Rotary is a huge part of that."

Tom Boylan - District Governor, District 5130 – Champion for Leogane, Haiti

PDG Barbara Spangler introduced the HANWASH program to our district and we have several Rotarians in our district championing the HANWASH program. As District Governor, I would say I have been fortunate to have worked with our District Governors over the past 14-years. My understanding of Rotary and the importance of the DG role has been guided by my interactions with leadership over the past fourteen years. I consider it an honor to have been selected to lead in 2023 - 2024. As I speak to our clubs I bring three primary messages to each. We need to increase our awareness and our actions with regard to our environment, and our voice needs to be raised to bring attention to mental health and the resources available throughout our district.

Membership concerns are not discussed with gloomy predictions, but rather as opportunities to increase our footprint in our local communities, and in the world. I have been inspiring clubs to promote their community connections, and to invite neighbors to work with them on community projects. If they work with us they will become our friends, and eventually a Rotarian.

I have created two websites to use as tools to promote Rotary's voice and work. GivingTime.org is an opportunity to list environmental projects in each individual county within our district with a goal of non-Rotarians joining to help. MentalHealth5130.org, is a resource recognizing the variety of types of mental health problems, and then listing mental health resources for each indivdual county in our district. I have a commitment from the DGE, and DGN to keep these programs into their leadership years. I look to develop a commitment to continuity for specific projects in our district, including HANWASH.

I am committed to leaving the world a better place for the generations to come. Rotary gives me the vehicle to make a difference locally, regionally, and globally.

Alfred Current– District Governor, District 6960 – Champion for Cavaillon, Haiti

District 6960’s continuing participation as a “Champion District’ supporting HANWASH is both a privilege and opportunity. As District Governor, I continue to lead an amazing district committed to changing the human condition for the better. D6960 was at the genesis of this bold project, one that will take more than a couple of decades to complete and one that because of my age, I will only see partial results. I offered to serve as a district governor to help Rotarians identify one thing, what they could do to change the world. Using that question leads to finding others that believe in one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus and align with a club focused on similar passions. I believe people don’t care ‘what you do’, but why you do it. Passion and purpose fueled with Rotary process make for a formula for success.

I am creating hope in the world by extending the bridges started by those leaders before me with a blueprint that those behind me can follow, as well. Rotary is a continuum of collaborative cooperation of like-minded volunteers with huge servant hearts. I want people to know it is not about me, but service above self.

And finally, we’d like to present you District 7020, the founding district of HANWASH with the 2018 signing of a partnership agreement with DINEPA – the national water authority of the Government of Haiti

David Kirkaldy – District Governor,District 7020

For 28 years, David Kirkaldy has been an integral part of the Rotary community. His introduction to HANWASH came through Barry Rassin and Jeremy Hurst. Recognizing the critical importance of HANWASH's mission to address clean water scarcity, David acknowledges the enormity of the challenge. However, he also notes that HANWASH's strategic positioning makes it an "easy sell," generating enthusiastic support and engagement. The sustained involvement with HANWASH is made possible by a dedicated team of coordinators, a HANWASH ambassador, and a proactive HANWASH engagement subcommittee.

David's contentment arises from HANWASH's status as a long-term endeavor that sparks hope across districts. Beyond his commitment to HANWASH, David holds a deep-seated passion for mental health and well-being, aligning seamlessly with this year's Rotary theme of "creating hope in the world."

During his visits to various Rotary clubs, he delivers compelling keynote addresses on suicide prevention, drawing from personal experiences that hold profound significance. These talks frequently lead to meaningful post-presentation discussions, where individuals share how these narratives have resonated with them, often revealing their own personal journeys. He would like to move the needle on acceptance of mental health issues in the Caribbean. David Kirkaldy is a strong voice for HANWASH and an advocate for mental health and well-being.

One Step Closer to Water for All in Cavaillon!

Our inaugural work in the Haitian commune of Cavaillon (“Cavaillon 1”) was a great success, thanks to a $228,000 “Global Grant” from The Rotary Foundation and the generosity of many donors.

Over a two-year period from 2019-2021, this project focused on improving local health systems, strengthening community participation in local governance, providing access public health education, and increasing availability of drinking water and sanitation facilities in some rural sections of Cavaillon and Côtes-de-Fer communes including four schools.

The project investment also included funds for constructing two new wells and the decontaminating of two other wells in the Gros Marin section of Cavaillon commune.

At least 3,420 community residents are benefiting from the work completed so far. This was led by volunteers in the Rotary Club of Les Cayes, Haiti and the Rotary Club of Naples, Florida and Rotary District 6960 as the international sponsor. We also appreciate the support of our donors, and of our cooperating organization Hope for Haiti which was the technical lead, and responsible for direct program implementation, managing contracts and collaborating with vendors and other partners, monitoring financials and reporting.

Second investment nearing end of construction stage

The next phase of the project, referred to as “Cavaillon 2,” is in progress. The objective of this phase of the program is to increase availability of drinking water to the citizens of Cavaillon town and improve the financial sustainability of the town’s piped water supply system. Our main partners are the mayor’s office, the regional water authority OREPA Sud, Northwater Consulting, Haiti Outreach, and Hope for Haiti.

This Global Grant is an investment with a value of more than $400,000 to date and consists of:

Installation of solar panels with a submersible pump in Grandieu, municipal section of Cavaillon, on an already existing well.
Installation of the discharge line to the cistern serving the town of Cavaillon.
Repair of the existing distribution network.
Implementation of pricing for access to the water.
Supply of the already existing line going from the cistern to Grandieu for water supply to this section.
Creating metered neighborhoods to help identify and repair leaks in the system.
Hygiene and sanitation training in local schools

Third investment in Cavaillon approved and about to begin

With Cavaillon 2 underway, we turned our attention back to the rural areas with

“Cavaillon 3”. This Global Grant investment has a projected budget of $309,051. A survey of the Commune of Cavaillon, conducted by Haiti Outreach, identified the need for 89 new wells. The Cavaillon 3 project will provide water and sanitation solutions in up to 9 rural villages, reaching as many as 2,000 citizens. These communities were identified in partnership with the Mayor’s office and other local authorities. A separate component of the grant aims to understand the aquifers that supply groundwater to serve the many towns and villages within the Commune of Cavaillon. The project is funded, approved and project meetings have begun.

HANWASH est une cause qui lui tient à cœur, car elle comprend profondément l’importance cruciale de l’eau propre pour tout le monde. Grâce à une subvention mondiale de la Fondation Rotary, des efforts de collaboration sont en cours pour réorganiser le système d'approvisionnement en eau à Pignon en partenariat avec le Rotary Club de Pignon, dans le nord d'Haïti.

Ce projet complet a une valeur d'investissement d'environ $480,000.00 et implique l'établissement de zones de comptage de district, la transition des systèmes diesel aux systèmes solaires et l'intégration de fonctionnalités de détection acoustique des fuites et de surveillance à distance. Elle a appris très vite que sa passion est de faciliter, d'inspirer et de motiver les autres à créer un changement positif dans leurs communautés. Lorsqu'elle arrive dans un club, elle ne leur dit pas ce qu'elle ou le District attend d'eux; son travail n'est pas de leur dire quoi faire pour que le District atteigne ses objectifs.

Marjolein se considère comme la pom-pom girl en chef. Quelle que soit la taille du club, elle essaie d’encourager les membres à choisir quelques choses qui les passionnent et à faire ces choses, mais à les faire bien! Son travail consiste à leur fournir des ressources, des encouragements et à leur faire connaître les opportunités incroyables dans leur magnifique district. Marjolein estime qu'il est essentiel que D5060 mise sur la continuité tout au long de ses activités. Cela inclut l'équipe de direction, les comités de district et bon nombre de ses programmes. Mais surtout, elle est ravie d'apprendre que les clubs construisent des équipes plus fortes, s'amusent de plus en plus et créent de l'espoir dans LEUR monde. Marjolein dit : « Ce que vous voulez savoir sur moi, c'est que je suis un livre ouvert. J'aime apprendre, j'aime les gens et j'aime le Rotary. J'ai probablement l'air d'une retardée scolaire, mais le Rotary est ma thérapie. J'aimerais penser que j'essaie de m'améliorer chaque jour et le Rotary y joue un rôle important."

MentalHealth5130.org est une ressource reconnaissant la variété des types de problèmes de santé mentale, puis répertoriant les ressources en santé mentale pour chaque comté de notre district. J'ai un engagement de la part du DGE et du DGN à maintenir ces programmes pendant leurs années de leadership. Je cherche à développer un engagement en faveur de la continuité pour des projets spécifiques dans notre district, y compris HANWASH. Je m’engage à laisser un monde meilleur aux générations à venir. Le Rotary me donne le moyen de faire une différence aux niveaux local, régional et mondial.

Alfred Current– Gouverneur de district, District 6960

La participation continue du District 6960 en tant que « District Champion » soutenant HANWASH est à la fois un privilège et une opportunité. En tant que gouverneur de district, je continue de diriger un district extraordinaire déterminé à améliorer la condition humaine. Le D6960 a été à l’origine de ce projet audacieux, dont la réalisation prendra plus de deux décennies et dont, en raison de mon âge, je ne verrai que des résultats partiels. Je me suis proposé de devenir gouverneur de district pour aider les Rotariens à identifier une chose : ce qu'ils pourraient faire pour changer le monde. Utiliser cette question permet de trouver d’autres personnes qui croient en l’un des sept domaines d’intervention du Rotary et qui s’alignent sur un club axé sur les mêmes passions.

Je crois que les gens ne se soucient pas de « ce que vous faites », mais plutôt de pourquoi vous le faites. La passion et la détermination nourries par le processus du Rotary constituent la formule du succès.

Je crée de l'espoir dans le monde en prolongeant les ponts lancés par les dirigeants avant moi avec un plan que ceux qui sont derrière moi peuvent également suivre. Le Rotary est le fruit d'une coopération continue entre des bénévoles partageant les mêmes idées et dotés d'un immense cœur de serviteur. Je veux que les gens sachent qu’il ne s’agit pas de moi, mais du service avant soi.

District fondateur/hôte de HANWASH

Depuis 28 ans, David Kirkaldy fait partie intégrante de la communauté rotarienne. Son introduction à HANWASH s'est faite grâce à Barry Rassin et Jeremy Hurst. Reconnaissant l'importance cruciale de la mission de HANWASH visant à lutter contre la pénurie d'eau potable, David reconnaît l'énormité du défi. Cependant, il note également que le positionnement stratégique de HANWASH en fait un produit « facile à vendre », générant un soutien et un engagement enthousiastes. L'implication durable dans HANWASH est rendue possible par une équipe dévouée de coordinateurs, un ambassadeur HANWASH et un sous-comité d'engagement proactif HANWASH.

La satisfaction de David vient du statut de HANWASH en tant qu'entreprise à long terme qui suscite l'espoir dans tous les districts. Au-delà de son engagement envers HANWASH, David a une passion profonde pour la santé mentale et le bien-être, qui s'inscrit parfaitement dans le thème du Rotary de cette année : créer de l'espoir dans le monde. Au cours de ses visites dans divers Rotary clubs, il prononce des discours captivants sur la prévention du suicide, s'appuyant sur des expériences personnelles profondément significatives. Ces discussions mènent souvent à des discussions post-présentation significatives, au cours desquelles les individus partagent comment ces récits ont résonné en eux, révélant souvent leur propre parcours personnel. Il aimerait faire avancer l’acceptation des problèmes de santé mentale dans les Caraïbes. David Kirkaldy est une voix forte pour HANWASH et un défenseur de la santé mentale et du bien-être.

Un pas de plus vers l’eau pour tous à Cavaillon !

Notre travail inaugural dans la commune haïtienne de Cavaillon 1 a été un grand succès, grâce à une subvention mondiale de $228,000.00 de la Fondation Rotary et à la générosité de nombreux donateurs. Cette subvention mondiale est un investissement d'une valeur de plus de $400,000.00 à ce jour et comprend :

Installation de panneaux solaires avec pompe submersible à Grandieu, section communale de Cavaillon, sur un puits déjà existant.
Installation de la conduite de refoulement vers la citerne desservant la ville de Cavaillon.
Réparation du réseau de distribution existant.
Mise en place d'une tarification de l'accès à l'eau.
Fourniture de la conduite déjà existante allant de la citerne à Grandieu pour l'alimentation en eau de cette section.
Créer des quartiers dotés de compteurs pour aider à identifier et réparer les fuites dans le système.
Formation en hygiène et assainissement dans les écoles locales

Un troisième investissement à Cavaillon approuvé et sur le point de démarrer

Avec Cavaillon 2 en cours, nous avons tourné notre attention vers les zones rurales avec

"Cavaillon 3". Cet investissement de subvention mondiale est doté d'un budget prévu de $309,051.00. Une enquête de la Commune de Cavaillon, menée par Haiti Outreach, a identifié le besoin de 89 nouveaux puits.
