District 115 Community,
As yet another school year comes to a close, I am reminded how blessed we are to have such amazing community support for our staff and students. I am extremely grateful to the individuals who generously donate to the district/schools, volunteer in the classrooms, attend student activities and district-sponsored events, serve on district committees, and advocate for and serve as roles models to the district's 6,000 students. Like many districts across the country, District 115 will also recognize the dedication, passion, and tireless efforts of our employees this week. Please take a few minutes to reach out to a District 115 employee and let them know how much you appreciate their contributions to our wonderful school community.
The District 115 community is unique in its strong desire to preserve a small town community feel, while still providing an increasing number of students the innovative learning and extra-curricular opportunities that are so important to their future success. The District 115 Strategic Plan guides this continual improvement. As we now complete the second year of the three-year plan, we will ask our community for feedback on the progress we have made thus far in our four goal areas. In the coming weeks, keep an eye out for an email from the district about the survey, and please thoughtfully participate in the feedback process. Your input is critically important as we continue to advance education in our district.
Looking ahead to the 2018-19 school year, we will continue to expand learning opportunities for students, increase student access to technology at the primary level, increase the rigor of our curriculum, allow for greater flexibility in student/staff schedules at the secondary level, increase our engagement with parents/guardians, and provide more relevant parental education opportunities.
We will see the Dual Language program offered at two schools: Autumn Creek Elementary School (grades K-3) and Yorkville Intermediate School (grades 4-6). Also next school year, our Early Childhood program will be offered at Bristol and Circle Center Grade Schools and our Life and Academic Skills program (LASP) will be expanded at both Grande Reserve Elementary School and at the high school, as will the STARS program at Yorkville Middle School.
District 115's advancements and expansions are possible because of the incredibly talented and committed employees, caring and involved parents/guardians, and the continuously supportive businesses and community. Thank you to everyone for another successful year in District 115!
Have a very safe and relaxing summer.

In Illinois, public education is the state's constitutional responsibility. The state delegates to local school boards the authority to govern school districts within the parameters set by state law. Y115's music education program receives national recognition
|
|
Yorkville CUSD 115 has been honored with a Best Communities for Music Education designation for its outstanding commitment to music education. District 115 is joined by only nine other districts in Illinois to receive this designation for demonstrating an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.
The NAMM Foundation's award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. "Yorkville CUSD 115 strives to provide high-quality experiences in the fine arts as part of our overall mission to educate our students," said Superintendent Dr. Timothy Shimp. "The extensive participation in our music program is affirmation that our families value this aspect of education."
To qualify for the Best Communities designation, a district must meet certain thresholds regarding funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs.

| YIS student recognized for having "good character" |
|
|
 |
| AJ Baron was recognized in front of his classmates by YIS Principal Steve Bjork. |
 |
YIS student AJ Baron was recognized at his school and at the April Board of Education meeting for being nominated for a Heart of the Fox Award.
"AJ truly exemplifies all aspects of having good character. AJ makes it a point to say 'hello' to students in the hallway and include everyone in PE and recess games and activities. He doesn't shy away from being friends with or playing with students who are different. He is a great role model for others because he does not judge others. He goes above and beyond to include students and make them feel noticed. AJ is exceptionally kind and his bright heart does not go unnoticed. These are all things that not only make him a great student and a great friend, but also a great Yorkville Fox."

Approximately 55,000 books collected for Zambia library
|
|
Due to the incredible generosity of Yorkville CUSD 115 families, approximately 55,000 books were donated to an effort to fill the shelves of a library in Zambia, a country in southern Africa.
During a one-week book drive, elementary schools and the high school student council and national honor society collected an incredible number of books to help local resident, Dr. Edward Kapambwe, fill a newly built library in Africa. Kapambwe, whose two children attended Yorkville schools, plans to ship all the books to Africa this summer.
Thank you to all who donated, teacher Steph McHugh and
Josh Slavin's Timeout 4 Kids charity for heading up the effort, the elementary
school librarians, YHS Student Council, YHS National Honor Society, Rosati's Pizza, and all those in the district
who assisted with the packaging and delivering of the books.
