Charting New Horizons: A Story of Collaboration and Innovation



In an era where traditional print media is facing challenges, one publication in the Denver metro area is defying the odds through collaboration and innovation. OutFront Magazine (OFM), a free printed publication dedicated to local events, current topics, and issues impacting the Denver metro area and the LGBTQ+ community, found itself in a predicament familiar to many print publications: the need for additional writers, editors, and staff positions without the funding to support it.


Arapahoe/Douglas Works!, a workforce center dedicated to connecting individuals with employment opportunities and businesses with skilled workers, became involved to help. Through an encounter at a local job fair, a workforce specialist from Arapahoe/Douglas Works! connected with Addison Herron-Wheeler, co-owner of OFM, sparking a collaboration that would change the landscape of the publication.


Working closely with a business development representative from Arapahoe/Douglas Works!, OFM embarked on a journey of creating work-based learning (WBL) opportunities and on-the-job training (OJT) positions. Through the work-based learning program, OJT’s reimburse businesses up to 100% of wages associated with the cost of training. Today, 12 individuals have completed or are currently enrolled in paid work-based learning opportunities with OFM, and 31 additional participants have been referred. The Arapahoe/Douglas Works! 2024-2027 local plan is available for review and public comment until May 13th and the Central Planning Region Plan is open for public comment through May 5th. The plans can be viewed on the Colorado Workforce Development Council (CWDC) website.

New DOL Rule Raises Minimum Salary Threshold

for Employee Overtime Exemption

The threshold will increase to $43,888 on July 1, 2024, and to $58,656 on January 1, 2025. Many employers will need to convert some employees to non-exempt or provide pay increases. Read More

The Benefit Recovery Fund has officially been launched

The Benefit Recovery Fund is a statewide wage replacement program for W-2 undocumented workers in Colorado who lost their job through no fault of their own, and who are not eligible to receive other assistance due to their immigration status. It will provide cash payments for eligible individuals to help them pay for things like food, shelter, healthcare, clothing and other critical needs due to a recent loss of employment. Learn More

Transforming Training and the Eligible Training Provider List

to Serve the U.S. Workforce

The Workforce Transformation Policy Council (WTPC) is a select group of over 20 workforce development leaders convened by Jobs for the Future (JFF) and the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB). The aim of this council is to identify policy changes that are needed to transform the U.S. workforce development system so that it is better able to meet the complex needs of today’s and tomorrow’s work and labor market. A/D Works! hosted Talent Pipeline Makeover Workshop

Arapahoe/Douglas Works! Workforce Center hosted the Talent Pipeline Makeover Workshop on April 23, 2024. Anthony Cherwinski from the Office of New Americans (ONA) was the keynote speaker. He advised employers on everything from establishing New American hiring initiatives to creating upskilling programs for multicultural teams. If you are interested in working with this talent pool, view ONA’s webinar series “Working with New Americans: From Recruiting to Upskilling.”


There was a panel discussion that focused on innovative strategies to recruit and hire diverse populations to harness new talent pools. The panel featured representatives from the Immigrant & Refugee Center of Northern Colorado, Blue Star Recycling, Latino Coalition, Colorado Neurodiversity Chamber of Commerce, and CDLE Veteran Services.

Young Adult Summer Job Hunt Bootcamp

Arapahoe/Douglas Works! is presenting a no-cost Summer Job Hunt Boot Camp designed for young adults aged 14-18. This comprehensive event will equip young adults with the knowledge and tools to succeed in finding a summer job to support their goals, and succeed in future job searches. Topics include career exploration, etiquette & self-advocacy in the workplace, interviewing, resume building, labor market information, and career pathway planning. There will be a job fair to follow on June 7.
