From February 2020 to February 2022...
The year-over-year analysis in this newsletter will compare data from the current year to data from 2020. This shift will allow us to compare the pre-pandemic data to current labor market information, and help us provide a better analysis of the economic recovery.

Highlights from the recent report include:

  • From February 2020 to February 2022, the unemployment rate in Tulare County decreased by 2.1 percent, and jobs increased by 1.1 percent
  • The 9.2 percent unemployment rate represents the lowest February unemployment rate for Tulare County since 1990, as far back as data is available
  • From February 2020 to February 2022, employment increased by 2,000, while the labor force decreased by 2,700
  • From January to February of this year, the industries with the largest numerical month-over growth were Food Services & Drinking Places and Local Government (education), while Retail Trade experienced the largest month-over numerical loss in jobs
  • In February 2022, Tulare County saw the highest employment numbers for Educational & Health Services and Food Services & Drinking places since 1990, as far back as data is available

HOW DOES TULARE COUNTY'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE CHANGE OVER TIME?
The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported a 2.1 percent decrease in Tulare County's unemployment rate, from a revised 11.3 percent in February 2020 to 9.2 percent in February 2020. 

From January to February of 2022, the month-over-month unemployment rate decreased by 0.5 percent, greater than the average month-over decrease of 0.1 percent.
The graph below shows the trends in February employment and unemployment over the last 10 years. In February of 2022, there were 187,600 people employed, more than any other year during the month of February in Tulare County since 1990, as far back as data is available.

HOW MANY JOBS HAVE COME AND GONE IN THE LAST YEAR & THE LAST MONTH?
2020 TO 2022 | A COMPARISON
From February 2020 to February 2022, Transportation, Warehousing & Utilities, showed the greatest year-over numerical and percent gains with an increase of 2,500 jobs, and job growth of 35.7 percent. Professional & Business Services showed the greatest numerical and percent decline with a loss of 2,400 jobs, and a job loss of 18.5 percent.
MONTH OVER MONTH | A COMPARISON
From January to February 2022, Food Services & Drinking Places and Local Government (Education) shared the greatest month-over numerical gain with an increase of 400 jobs, while Accommodation showed the greatest percent increase with job growth of 12.5 percent. Retail Trade showed the greatest month-over numerical and percent decline with a loss of 100 jobs and a loss of 0.6 percent of jobs.
