What is Morphemic Splitting?

How do you "prove" that a word contains a specific unit of meaning? You split the word into pieces, and each piece must contain meaning. Let's try it with a few words.

cooked splits into cook (root) + ed (suffix)
unionize splits into union (root) + ize (suffix)    or does it?
unionize = un (prefix) + ion (root) + ize (suffix)

Morphemic splitting is an extremely valuable tool, but ultimately context will help you make a final decision about a word.
