Woodsy's Music of Medina
October 2010
Welcome to Woodsy's Music of Medina
Greetings!

With the days getting shorter and the weather colder, many of us have turned our attention to what will occupy all of our new found indoor time. It's nice to have something meaningful and stimulating like music (wether playing or listening) to help fill in that time. We know that many of you feel the same way because we see you and your children here for music lessons every week. With the lesson studio taking off as it has we have found the need to expand our lesson space to include 5 new rooms! You may have noticed this already by all of the hammers and saws that you've heard downstairs when you come into the store. Look for pictures of the work in progress in future issues. In this issue we'll talk about humidifying issues for you acoustic instrument players, do an interview with one of our guitar instructors, Tim Norris, and introduce some sales for the fall season. Thanks for reading!

Yamaha Electric Pianos
We have talked to a lot of customers who are either learning piano themselves or have a child who is learning and are looking for a real piano feel without the high price. Our Yamaha electric pianos certainly fit the bill! There are several things about them that make them more desireable or practical than a real piano.
  • The hammer action feels EXACTLY like a real piano
  • They have the full 88 keyboard
  • They never need to be tuned like a real piano
  • You can use headphones with them for practicing later at night
  • They barely take up any space (we've heard about some of the students keeping one in their college dorm!)
  • No moving expenses
  • The Arius series comes in an elegant wood cabinet that is very pleasing to the eye
We have several models to choose from depending on your needs, and since we are a yamaha authorized repair location you'll never have to worry about what you'll do if anything goes wrong.
Repair Corner: Humidity and Wood Instruments guitar humidifier
With the cold weather coming on many of us have already started kicking on those heaters for the first time, and that means lower humidity levels. Some of you may already know the adverse effects that low humidity can have on wooden instruments, but those of you who don't here's a few things to remember. The relative humidity in the environment that you're storing the instrument in should be about 50%. Once you get down in the mid to low 30's you're really tempting fate. Low humidity can cause:
  • cracks in the body and particularly the fingerboard when it is made of unfinished rosewood or ebony
  • sharp fret edges on guitars ad basses
  • low action (string height) due to the soundboard drying out and sinking. This can casue string "buzz" or "fretting out"
You can avoid many of these problems by:
  • Using a soundhole humidifier for your instrument (pictured above)
  • installing a hygrometer in the room you store the instrument in or in the case to measure the relavtive humidity
  • using a room humidifier
  • keeping humidifiers full
Using a soundhole humidifier is an inexpensive and simple way to give you some real peace of mind during the dry days of winter. Heed these warnings and you might just avoid a trip to our repair bench this winter!
Teacher Spotlight: Tim Norris- Guitar guitar humidifier
We will be dedicating a section of the newsletter each month to a short interview with a member of our teaching staff. This month we are featuring one of the guitar teachers, Tim Norris.
How Long Have You Been Playing?
My Mom had me start piano lessons at age 5. Soon after that I began strumming partial chords on her old acoustic guitar.
How many guitars do you have? Which is your favorite?
9 if you include my bass guitars. My Mexican Strat with a custom Warmoth neck and Texas Special pick-ups is my favorite.
Do you play in a band? What kind of music do you play?
A couple of friends and I started a project. What kind of music is it?I can tell you it's not country or metal.
What is your teaching philosophy?
It changes a little depending on the student, but I believe that a fundamental understanding of music theory and attention to rhythmic details can lead to quick progress. A student who quickly realizes the creative potential of the instrument will play forever.
What's your favorite part about teaching?
Seeing the excitement in the students when they begin to invest themselves and realize how quickly they can progress without practicing for hours every day.
