Value-Added Accelerators: Invitation to Virtual Regional Engagement Sessions

Government of BC | forestpolicy@gov.bc.ca

Government is working to grow value-added wood manufacturing in BC because we believe in maximizing value to families and communities from the trees we harvest.

We are inviting you to help us achieve that goal.

We have established the Value-Add Accelerators to bring together First Nations, value-added manufacturers, forest licensees and BC government staff to develop solutions, with a focus on increasing fibre flow to support value-added manufacturers. The partners leading this work are the First Nations Forestry Council, the BC Value-Added Wood Coalition, the Council of Forest Industries, and the Ministry of Forests and BC Timber Sales.

We need you! Come to a virtual regional engagement session to learn more about the work and share your thoughts.

 *  North – October 19th, 9-11am

 *  South – October 19th, 1-3pm

 *  Coast – October 24th, 1-3pm

DFD Group’s “The stay Healing Park Resort” Project of 300 Wood Framed Homes

JC Lee | jclee@bcwood.com

“The stay Healing Park Resort” was originally opened in 2017 and the first phase included a golf course, flower garden, wild garden, hotel, single family homes, multi-family homes, healing forest, spa, pool etc. So far, a total of 62 of the planned 300 wooden homes have been built using wood from British Columbia. The DFD Group considered importing full-packaged homes from Canada, but in the end partnered with Smart House, a local company introduced by BC Wood Korea, for the first phase.

During the next phase, DFD is planning to build 65 high-end homes, which will be either traditional European or Canadian full-packaged timberframe homes. In a meeting with Hwang Jae-moo, Executive Director of the DFD Group, BC Wood's JC Lee persuaded him to use Canadian-style prefabricated packaged home components from BC Wood members.

The 2024 Nikkei Architectural and Construction Materials Show, which will be held from March 12th to 15th, is the biggest construction industry trade show in Japan. It covers everything from lumber to finished products. Nikkei attracts large numbers of architects and designers working on commercial projects, so it is a great event to promote high-value wood products and finishing materials. Senate Bill Encouraging Wood Use in Public Buildings Passed Unanimously in the House of Commons

NDP

A Senate bill, originally introduced by NDP MP Richard Cannings, that would encourage the use of more environmentally sustainable materials in public buildings, passed unanimously in the House of Commons and will now become law.

Bill S-222 requires the government to assess all building materials’ environmental benefits, including their carbon footprint, before approving their use in government buildings. It was originally inspired in part by the example of Structurlam, a leading producer of mass timber products in North America based in Penticton, BC.

Spreading the Wood: Three Projects That are Leading the Way in Canadian Mass Timber Innovation

Canadian Architect

Over the past decade, engineered mass timber has evolved from a new and innovative choice of structural material to becoming almost mainstream. Canadian architects have played a major role in the material’s acceptance in the North American building industry, with British Columbia architects at the vanguard of harnessing Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) around 10 years ago.

As the three in-construction projects featured on the following pages demonstrate, Canadian mass timber expertise continues to advance—and in Michael Green’s case, it is garnering international projects. Moreover, architects including MTA with Acton Ostry are looking beyond the material’s vaunted renewability and carbon-sink aspects to make their mass-timber buildings even more environmentally sound. And lastly, architects like Intelligent City are integrating and overhauling the very process of designing and building with mass timber.

Meet the B.C. Lumberjacks Who Set Out to Build a Hybrid Electric Logging Truck

The Globe and Mail

Six years ago, Chace Barber was a truck driver hauling logs from B.C.’s remote forests, spending $15,000 a month on fuel.

Searching for a way to cut fuel costs, Mr. Barber pooled his savings and put down a deposit on a Tesla semi. Five years later, he still hadn’t received the truck. But the supply chain delays gave him cause to pause. The Tesla TSLA-Q +1.12% increase semi prioritized aerodynamics to maximize the batteries. This meant the truck was light, but not durable or rugged enough for Mr. Barber and the British Columbia backcountry.

Cross-Laminated Timber Could Reduce Forest Waste

Spokane Public Radio

Manufacturing timber products from smaller trees could be a sustainable way to address the state’s housing crisis.

Mercer Mass Timber in Spokane Valley produces cross-laminated timber (CLT) products, where layers of wood are stacked in alternate directions, and bonded with adhesives. The result is a building material that is strong and lightweight. It’s also made from smaller trees than normally used in lumber manufacturing.

The Potentials and Provocations of Architecture’s Favourite Eco-Material

The Architect's Newspaper

Wood construction is ancient, but it is also evolving more rapidly than ever before. Mass timber presents a new way to build renewable, plant-based urban density. As wood sequesters, stores, and avoids the most carbon of any structural material, it’s essential to low-carbon living.
