UEZ Hearings

WomenRising was well- represented at recent budget hearings in Trenton. The Urban Enterprise Zone funding, (UEZ), has been a principal sponsor of WomenRising's Community Partnership in Hotel Employment (CPHE) program.  The current allocation of UEZ funding, which is returned to the communities to fund programs to fuel job & economic growth, is being threatened by the governor's proposed budget. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the current UEZ funding system, WomenRising representatives testified at the committee hearings of both the Senate and Assembly.  Dramatic testimony was given by two graduates of the CPHE program.  Gaissire Diop, a VIP Lounge Attendant at the Sheraton Hotel in Weehawken, spoke about how working has helped her entire family.  Cassandra Williams, the Supervisor and Night Auditor at the Sheraton in Weehawken, told the committee how valuable the opportunity for training is, especially for inner city women. Her comments were met by a chorus of praise from the state senators and a round of applause from the onlookers.   Stay tuned for the final resolution  to this issue.

We thank them for thinking of us on their special day!

Greetings!

We hope you're enjoying your summer.  It's a great time to get back in touch with family and friends with cookouts, picnics, vacations and more.  In June alumnae and current clients enjoyed a fun family camping trip.  Then in July the children at Project Home are going to see Mary Poppins on Broadway, and Fairmount Housing Corp (our affordable housing subsidiary) is organizing a 'Streetscape and Beautification' project.  Both are courtesy of Goldman Sachs Community Teamworks program.  We hope you are having as much fun, and stay cool and safe and, of course, never forget your sunscreen.

Bank of America Supports WomenRising
WomenRising has received of a $25,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. The grant will support workforce and economic development activities that are part of WomenRising's Community Economic Development programs.

"Through this generous gift of $25,000, WomenRising and Bank of America have a wonderful opportunity to work together to empower the communities we jointly serve throughout Hudson County," said William Bajor, Ph.D., Director of Community Economic Development at WomenRising.

It will enable WomenRising to further their goal of helping families achieve self-sufficiency, participate in the local economy, influence local industries to expand employment opportunities, facilitate people's entry into the workforce, and provide support for people through the early stages of employment.

"Through our support of WomenRising and their workforce and economic development initiatives, we are helping to create opportunities not only for individuals and their families, but for the community as a whole,"said Edward Montesdeoca, Hudson/Bergen consumer market executive, Bank of America.

Common Impact

Last month we told you about the  Common Impact program and how it partnered WomenRising with Jefferiesa global securities and investment banking group, that has an office at the Harborside Financial Center in downtown Jersey City.

Work is complete on this project, and we have been provided with a Technology Assessment complete with plans for resolving current issues.  Some of the steps include hiring a part time IT Specialist,  implementing staff training, equipment replacement and upgrades developing standards for software and network configuration, and more.  Upon it's completion, this plan will bring WomenRising up to date with technology.

We'd like to thank the Jefferies team who spent many hours working with us and researching solutions.

Jefferies liked working with us as much as we enjoyed working with them.  "It was a wonderful project that gave me a chance to give back to the community, and in an unexpected bonus, allowed me to bond with colleagues from Jefferies in a different environment" said Edna Edelman, Team Leader.  Christie Gatto, Program Manager, also expressed enjoying the work and the chance to give back.

Employee Achievements
We'd like to congratulate some of WomenRising's employees for their recent accomplishments:

Natasha Powell, from Youth & Family received her Masters in Social Work from Rutgers University.

Quarticha Anthony, from Domestic Violence Services, who was accepted into the Rutgers' Intensive Weekend Masters of Social Work program.

Special Visit

We had a special visit organized by the Consulate to The Netherlands.  Two police officers, Jard Hagoort and Tim van der Giessen, from the he Dutch police region Gelderland-Midden visited in June. They came to WomenRising to learn more about Domestic Violence and our work with the local police departments.  As part of their training they were doing an international comparison between the preventive approach to domestic violence in the United States and the approach by the Dutch police.  Within the police region of Gelderland-Midden as well as the whole country of The Netherlands reducing domestic violence is a priority.

As part of their visit the officers in training interviewed 3 key members of the WomenRising Domestic Violence Services team.  They learned about the preventative measures at WomenRising as well as the legal framework in place in Hudson County and New Jersey.  It was a great opportunity for them to hear first hand about our procedures and methods, and how WomenRising is working with the local police departments to put an end to domestic violence.
