Women in Leadership Breakfast was a hit!

The PULSE Professional Development Committee held their annual Women in Leadership Breakfast i October. This year, our wonderful panel consisted of Kristen Gondek, Jennifer Ven Rooy, Laura Jones, and Coua Xiong. These local YPs told their stories and gave insight on what it means to be a leader, the responsibility one has, staying true to yourself, and how to challenge others. It was a great event, and we look forward to hosting it again next year!

Candles and Caramel Apples

Come make a candle with PULSE, and while it sets, help yourself to a caramel apple bar! We are excited to support Eclectic Candle Company, a YP owned business, where we can network surrounded by great smells and snacks! Not into candles? No worries - come spend time with your fellow PULSE members on a beautiful (hopefully) fall day.

If you plan to make a candle, you can purchase your container there or enter our most interesting container contest! Find a container that can hold liquid and is flame resistant to make your candle in; the most interesting container will be voted on by those in attendance, and the winner will receive a gift card. All candle pours will be 12 oz no matter the size of your container. For those who choose to purchase their container there, the rate will be $20 (container + 12 oz pour). See you there! Register here.

2024 Mentorship Program

PULSE is teaming up with Leadership Fox Cities Alumni to create a FREE mentorship program. We are excited to offer this opportunity for both programs to work together, learn from each other, and grow over the course of one year. The program runs January to December with the requirement to meet just once a month for one hour. If you’re interested in being a mentee, contact Jodie, and she’ll get you on the list! We’ll notify those in the program in December to set them up for success in January with their new mentor. Come learn from amazing professionals in our region! Coffee and Conversation

YPs gathered at Aquila Café on October 23 for a casual morning of coffee and conversation.  These bi-monthly events are a nice way to meet PULSE people, get out and try new places, and start your morning off right! This was the last Coffee and Conversation for 2023, but they will be back in full swing in January 2024. Thank you to everyone who’s attended one this year, and we hope to see you all next year.

Dale Carnegie Leadership Training

Our second session of the semester with Dale Carnegie brought YPs together to learn about “Outstanding Customer Service”. This high energy, high participation course continues to make a difference for those who attend. Interested in trying it out? Join us in November as we look to “Empower Employees: Managing and Retaining Them in a New Hybrid World”. This is great for those in managerial roles, who are working towards it, or who are currently in a hybrid role. Come and check it out on November 14; register here. Our final session will take place on December 6, and you’re welcome to register ahead of time for “Identifying Your Conversation Style”.

3 Ways You’re Letting Work Ruin Your Holidays (and How to Stop)

PULSE Member Spotlight

Meet Kyle Jones

Owner

Eclectic Candle Company

Meet Kyle Jones! Kyle moved to the Fox Valley from Ohio right after graduating high school in 2016. Most of his family is still there except for Kim Sippola, his older sister, who moved up here several years prior and currently owns The Quotient Group specializing in aviation marketing. Once settled, he began school at Fox Valley Technical College during the day and held a bartending position at night throughout his school career. While attending FVTC there was something else he wished to pursue, a new business called Eclectic Candle Company where he could apply what he was learning in school to real life situations and vice versa. Kyle ended up creating a business that eventually turned into his full-time career and is now a candle bar and event space in Downtown Appleton. Even though he has been successful in running a small business, this was not always his dream. In his younger years, he wanted to be a marine biologist and explore the world's oceans. Even though he is not a marine biologist, he loves to travel and is very fond of Savannah, Georgia, and its neighboring cities. Despite all his travels, no place feels like home as much as the Fox Valley, where you can experience so many things like a big city yet have a close-knit community like a small town.

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?

“That was a really good laugh. Even though I don’t get many days off, I especially enjoy going to PULSE events and participating in the social committee. Out of all the events, I have particularly enjoyed the happy hour ones because it is such a fun way to build connections and relationships while enjoying an adult beverage in a fun setting.”

As the host of the next event, we hope to see you there so that you can get to know Kyle. He’s excited to meet his fellow young professionals!

Killers of a Certain Age

by Deanna Raybourn

Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for forty years. When the foursome is sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to mark their retirement, they are targeted by one of their own. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize they've been marked for death.

They're about to teach the Board what it really means to be a woman--and a killer--of a certain age.

Community Involvement

  • Consider joining a PULSE committee to give back in 2024. Our three committees are the heart and soul of the program, and without them, much of what PULSE has been able to do and is working to provide in the future wouldn’t happen. Read the committee descriptions below and think about taking a more active role in the program – your program!
  • Engagement Committee: The engagement committee acts as ambassadors for the program to get people involved throughout the year and within the events themselves. The goal is to provide connection with members from the moment they apply as PULSE pals and then carry that through to their first event and beyond. In addition, this committee works to connect members to the community through volunteering opportunities. Engagement is key for the success of the program as well as for the success of each of its members.
  • Social Committee: The social committee focuses on network building and connection. Through their efforts and events, members of PULSE will have the opportunity to connect with each other, the community, and local businesses. The goal is to create an open and welcoming environment for all while creating strong connections from which to build. This committee plans fun, lively, and active events to get people engaged.
  • Professional Development Committee: The professional development committee works to provide opportunities for PULSE members to better themselves through learning and experience. With the programming created, members can gain access to knowledge, mentors, and new ways of conducting themselves and business. The goal is to provide what our young professionals need to grow and flourish in their current roles while laying the groundwork for advancement and/or new opportunities.
  • Apply here for any of the committees.
  • Side Hustle Social:

Want to connect with others as you work and dabble in a side hustle business? Folks over at gener8tor have started a social group to connect local side hustlers with each other and those who have successfully taken their side hustle to a full-blown business. Whether you are an aspiring, on-the-side, or a full time entrepreneur (or just enjoy supporting entrepreneurs), this group is for you.

You're all invited to join the gBeta 1915 Studios Fall Cohort Showcase event, a collaboration between Georgia-Pacific and gener8tor. The Fall 2023 cohort is doing amazing work in sustainability and material technologies. This event will not only include great networking, but you will get to hear 5 startups pitch, followed by a Q&A.

Doors open at 5:30pm, November 16 – Poplar Hall: 141 S. Riverheath Way, Appleton, WI 54915. The event is FREE - register here
