WSS President's Message

Team WSS!

This time of season is so refreshing – our academic centers are celebrating the graduation of the future of surgery and our community partners are preparing for their start dates a couple of months away!  The WSS Council and Committees have been busy with advocacy (Stop the Bleed, advocacy summit etc), Annual Program contract negotiations, revamping our membership committee initiatives and picking up the pace with the Program Committee.  We will have exciting news soon regarding the new American College of Surgeon dual dues option program which rolls out later this year – please watch for updates coming soon! As always – please contact me (btjarman@gundersenhealth.org) with any desire to get engaged with our great Society. I hope you all find some down time this summer and look forward to seeing you in November.

Strength and honor!

WSS Announces May 23 as Stop the Bleed Day in Wisconsin!

The Wisconsin Surgical Society has support from the state of Wisconsin to proclaim May 23 as Stop the Bleed Day in Wisconsin.

When a person is losing blood, every minute counts. On average, a trauma victim can bleed to death within five minutes, before professional emergency care arrives. The Stop the Bleed initiative was created to offer education and training to improve the survival of victims suffering from bleeding injuries. The program teaches people bleeding-control methods developed by the military and first responders to help everyday people become immediate responders.

The Wisconsin Surgical Society recently received a grant to offer Stop the Bleededucation and training across the state and will be reaching out to counties, employers, and other organizations to offer these important tools.

If you have an interest in offering education and training for your group please reach out to Jeanette May –jmay@wisurgicalsociety.com.

Research Study Participation Needed

Are you interested in participating in a research study to advance health outcomes? UW-Madison faculty, Dr. Sarah Jung and Dr. Jacqueline Kruser, are seeking physician participation in the following studies:

Dr. Jung is conducting a research study about recognition of discrimination against trainees in the surgical workplace, feelings about intervening, and potential facilitators and barriers to intervention. You are being asked to participate as a practicing surgeon by completing a 15-min survey and will be offered $50 as compensation for your participation.

Dr. Kruser invites you to participate in a research study called “Improving ICU Care for Older Adults with Serious Illness.” Critical care physicians are invited to join a study about how patients, families, and clinicians understand and discuss difficult decisions for critically ill patients. Your participation would involve one 60-min interview or focus group that will be audio recorded. In appreciation for your participation, you will receive a $50 gift card.

More information on each study can be found below.
