Marquette University Law School Poll released a new statewide poll on Wednesday, August 7th. Below, please find a summary of the survey's results.

Marquette University Law School released an August poll this Wednesday. Below, please find the methodology of the poll as released by the Law School in their press release:


About the Marquette Law School Poll


The poll interviewed 877 registered Wisconsin voters between July 24- August 1, 2024. The margin of error is +/- 4.6 percentage points for the full sample. The partisan makeup of the sample is 31% Republican, 29% Democratic and 40% independent. The interviews were conducted online with 737 respondents and with 140 by telephone using live interviewers.

National Politics

President Joe Biden


President Joe Biden Job Approval -15%

President Joe Biden Favorability -17%

  • Favorability 40% (Was 40% in June poll)
  • Unfavorability 57% (Was 58% in June poll)


The MU Law School Poll found that 42% of registered voters approve of the way Joe Biden is handling his job as president, and 57% disapprove of the way he is handling his job, a net -15% in job approval.


For comparison, in the last MU Law School survey in June 2024, 40% of registered voters approved of the job the president was doing and 57% disapproved of the way he was handling the job, a net -17% approval. 

President Biden’s personal favorability is similar to his job approval with 40% of registered voters having a favorable opinion of him and 57% having an unfavorable opinion of him, a net -17% favorability. His net favorability is 1 percentage-point better than the June poll, which found that 40% of registered voters had a favorable opinion of the President and 58% had an unfavorable opinion, a net -18% favorability.


Among voters who identified as Democrats, Biden is viewed favorably by 83% and unfavorably by 15%. Independents were 22% favorable and 73% unfavorable, while Republicans were 5% favorable and 93% unfavorable.

Senator Tammy Baldwin Favorability Even

44% of registered voters have a favorable opinion of Democratic US Senator Tammy Baldwin and 44% have an unfavorable opinion of her. Sen. Baldwin’s net favorability decreased between the June and August polls by 1 percentage-point.


About 81% of Democrats said they had a favorable opinion of Baldwin, compared to 35% of Independents and 10% of Republicans.


About 8% of Democrats said they had an unfavorable opinion of Baldwin, compared to 39% of Independents and 79% of Republicans.

Senator Ron Johnson

36% of registered voters have a favorable opinion of Republican US Senator Ron Johnson and 47% have an unfavorable opinion of him.


About 69% of Republicans said they had a favorable opinion of Johnson, compared to 28% of Independents and 3% of Democrats.


About 10% of Republicans had an unfavorable opinion of Johnson, compared to 45% of Independents and 88% of Democrats.

State Politics

Governor Tony Evers

Governor Tony Evers Job Approval +7%

  • 51% Approve (Was 51% in June poll)

50% of registered voters have a favorable opinion of Governor Evers and 41% have an unfavorable opinion of him. Evers’ net favorability increased 1 percentage-point between the June and August polls, increasing from +8% to +9%.


90% of Democrats and leaning Democrats said they had a favorable opinion of Evers, compared to 45% of independents and 14% of Republicans and leaning Republicans.


78% of Republicans and leaning Republicans said they had an unfavorable opinion of Evers, compared to 27% of independents and 5% of Democrats and leaning Democrats.

Governor Tony Evers’ job approval has remained stable with 51% of registered voters saying they approve of the job Governor Evers is doing and 44% saying they disapprove (+7% net approval). This is the same from the June survey when 51% said they approved and 44% disapproved of the job Gov. Evers was doing (a net +7% approval).


89% of Democrats and leaning Democrats said they approved of Evers, compared to 51% of Independents and 15% of Republicans and leaning Republicans.


80% of Republicans and leaning Republicans said they disapproved of Evers, compared to 34% of Independents and 7% of Democrats and leaning Democrats.

Respondents were asked “If you had to choose, would you vote for [Harris] or for [Trump]?”

About 4% of Republicans said they had a favorable opinion of Harris, compared to 26% of Independents and 84% of Democrats.


About 92% of Republicans had an unfavorable opinion of Harris, compared to 53% of Independents and 11% of Democrats.

Former President Donald Trump


Former President Donald Trump Favorability -10%

  • Favorability 44% (Was 41% in June poll)
  • Unfavorability 54% (Was 57% in June poll)


44% of registered voters have a favorable opinion of former President Donald Trump and 54% have an unfavorable opinion of him. Trump’s net favorability has increased to -10%, six points better than the net -16% favorability that he had in the June poll.


About 85% of Republicans said they had a favorable opinion of Trump, compared to 40% of Independents and 2% of Democrats.


About 13% of Republicans had an unfavorable opinion of Trump, compared to 54% of Independents and 98% of Democrats.

U.S. Senate Election


Respondents were asked “If the 2024 election for U.S. Senate were held today ... would you vote for [Hovde] or for [Baldwin]?”

24% of registered voters have a favorable opinion of GOP U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde and 37% have an unfavorable opinion of him.


About 49% of Republicans said they had a favorable opinion of Hovde, compared to 10% of Independents and 1% of Democrats.


About 8% of Republicans had an unfavorable opinion of Hovde, compared to 30% of Independents and 70% of Democrats.

National Issues

State of Nation’s Economy:

Respondents were asked "How would you describe the state of the nation’s economy these days? 33% of registered voters described the nation’s economy as “excellent” or “good” while 66% described it as “not so good” or “poor.”


Political affiliation had a significant impact on a respondent’s view of the nation’s economy with Republicans having a more pessimistic view compared to Democrats:


Excellent: 5% (GOP: 1% | Independents: 4% | Dems: 10%)

Good: 28% (GOP: 7% | Independents: 17% | Dems: 54%)

Not so good: 33% (GOP: 35% | Independents: 43% | Dems: 29%)

Poor: 33% (GOP: 57% | Independents: 37% | Dems: 7%)

Policy Issues

Most important issue 2024


Respondents were asked to identify the issue that will be important to them in deciding their vote for president in 2024. The economy ranks as the most important issue with 38% of registered voters saying it is the most important issue followed by abortion policy at 14%, immigration and border security at 13%, and Medicare & Social Security at 9%.

Partisan affiliation has a clear impact in determining whether a respondent views a particular issue as “most important” in relation to their vote for president. The top two issues that Republicans view as most important are the economy (55%) and immigration and border security (26%). Democrats, on the other hand, say the most important issues are abortion policy (26%) and Medicare and Social Security (18%). Meanwhile, Independents align more closely with Republicans on this question, saying the most important issues are the economy (45%) and healthcare (9%).
