Florida-bred Chi Chi Gets First Career Win in E.L. Gaylord

Ernest C. Frohboese's Chi Chi entered the $50,000 E.L. Gaylord a maiden and exited a stakes winner as the Florida-bred filly won for the first time in the six-and-a-half-furlong test for 2-year-old fillies at Remington Park Sunday.

Super Sicily, a Florida-bred daughter of Ocala Stud stallion Awesome Slew, won a US$56,299 maiden special weight by a length at Woodbine Sunday after leading at every point of call with jockey Leo Salles aboard.

Strangles Confirmed in Lake County

According to the Equine Disease Communication Center and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, a private facility in Lake County in Florida has been placed under quarantine by the FDACS as of Sept. 23 due a horse testing positive for strangles.


Only the animals under quarantine have additional travel restrictions.


A suckling foal was confirmed by a FDACS veterinary medical officer in Lake County with strangles after showing signs of swollen lymph nodes on Sept. 17 and confirmed on Sept. 21.



This is the 28th confirmed cases of strangles in Florida in 2023.
