Florida-bred Mattingly Ready for Home Game in Saturday's Florida Sire Stakes Affirmed

BY GULFSTREAM PARK PRESS OFFICE

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL—Trainer Joe Orseno had options for rising star Mattingly, including a trip to New York to run on turf in the Nov. 4 Atlantic Beach at Aqueduct or a cross-country flight to sunny Southern California to run in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Grade 1) at Santa Anita.

Instead, the stakes-winning son of Pleasant Acres Stallions’ Bucchero has been entered to make his dirt debut in Saturday’s $200,000 Affirmed, the seven-furlong second leg of the 2023 Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes series for eligible 2-year-old colts and geldings by accredited Florida stallions, at Gulfstream Park.

Florida-bred Scat Dancer – Calder Race Course Photo

This Day in Florida-bred History – October 19

1985 – F. Castro’s Scat Dancer and jockey S.B. Soto won the $400,000 Florida Stallion In Reality Stakes by three-and-three-quarters lengths at 8-1 odds at Calder Race Course. Bred in Florida by Thoromark, Ltd., and trained by Domingo Vasconcelos, the son of Sovereign Dancer broke from the outside post in the field of 19, the largest ever for the In Reality.

Scat Dancer would make his next start in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Aqueduct, finishing third behind winning Florida-bred Tasso with Storm Cat second.

Scat Dancer was consigned by Ocala Stud Farms as agent to the OBS 2-Year-Old in Training Sale in February of 1985 where Manuel Estevez purchased him for $32,000.
