Group Winter Snow Camp
WINTERCAMP 2013
Challenge Accepted
Each new day can be a fresh adventure.

This year, we celebrated our 12th Wintercamp in Steamboat Springs, CO. This is our ski & snowboard program for older campers, ages 13-18. Similar to summer camp, campers come together from referring burn units across the United States and live in a community.

There is a greater focus on high-process learning. This year's theme was "Challenge Accepted." Campers live in a condo with 4-5 other campers and 1-2 counselors. Like summer camp, they are called to be responsible for themselves and their own space.

The Program

After a long day of travel with cancelled and missed flights, the kids were ready to take on their next challenge at Steamboat Springs Resort.
Fresh snow and excited instructors created the perfect environment to
learn and improve on the mountain.

Campers are grouped together based on their sport and skill level and paired with a Steamboat Ski School Instructor who stays with them on the mountain throughout the entire camp experience providing continuity in instruction.

After skiing, the campers head back to the hotel for some hot tub and free time. It gives the campers a chance to unwind and regroup for the evening's activities. After dinner together, the campers participate in evening activity. This year all the evening activities centered around the theme of "Challenge Accepted."
Evening Reflections

Night One: Get to know you and introduction of the theme and presentation of journal boards.

Night Two: Dinner & "Minute to Win It" Game Night at the Steamboat Fire House. Later in the evening, teens gather together and talk about "Challenge Accepted."

What past experiences hold you back?
What could your perfect future look like?

Night Three:
Video vines.
Camp. Family. Teamwork. Facing Challenges.
Teens define their own limiting beliefs.

Teens return to condo for small group sessions where they are supported and determine if their limiting beliefs are actually how others see them.

Night Four: Evening activity at rustic Humble Ranch.
Teens are trained to focus around mantra,
"I can do this thing."
Teens leave limiting beliefs behind and break through their boards with determination and focus.
This allows them to break through to all their dreams for the future.

Words from the Campers

"Camp is one of the few places in the world of a burn survivor where everyone around you is there to support you completely no matter where you come from or what story you have to tell."

"Camp is a life-changing experience that is unique in every way."

"After your first year at camp, your family grows by about 100 because the relationships made are not just for that week but for the rest of your life."

"Camp is a place where you can feel at home."

"Everyone loves you just the way you are and you can eventually feel accepted and comfortable with your burn injury."

"Camp is the best place on earth. Even though it is for a short time, the memories and friends will last. Camp is a place where you come to be yourself. I love camp."
