WINES

Christina Ascheri, Gavi di Gavi, Piedmont, Italy

Varietal: Cortese Alc., 13.5%

Gavi is a northern Italian style of wine, exclusively made with the local Cortese grape variety, always made around the Piedmont town of Gavi. Cortese means courteous, which suits the wine’s easy, accessible style. This fine example of Gavi comes from the Ascheri family, who have been producing fine wines in Italy's Piedmont since 1880. This elegant Gavi features plenty of ripe stone and bright citrus fruit freshness. Pale straw color, fragrant, very fresh bouquet of wild flowers and citrus fruits. Crisp dry lemon and grapefruit on the palate. A nice sharpness about it. Herbaceous notes. Medium body, dry, crisp. Citrus (lemon, tangerine) with almond and stone. A great seafood starter. Pairs well with shellfish, lean fish, pork. $19.99

Terras Gauda O Rosal, Rias Baixas, Spain

Varietals: 70% Albariño, 20% Caiño, 10% Loureiro Alc. 12.5%

Terras (“land”) Gauda (“happiness”) was founded in 1990 by the Fonseca family in the southern-most region of Rías Baixas, O Rosal. Considered to be one of Rías Baixas’ most emblematic wineries, Terras Gauda routinely produces award-winning white wines made solely from estate-grown fruit. Many attribute the estate with being responsible for the advancement and development of the appellation as a whole, due to its dedication to quality control and preserving the native grape varieties of Galicia. The O Rosal is tangy and bright with lime citrus and seashells on the nose. It has a chalky and zesty palate with a medium body and a bone-dry and deliciously saline finish. $24.99

Occhipinti SP 68 Bianco, Sicily, Italy

Varietals: Alc 12.5%

Arianna Occhipinti started making her own wine with just one hectare of abandoned vines in the commune of Vittoria. She produced her first vintage in 2006 at the age of 24. Over the years, she has progressively expanded the estate by replanting 10 hectares of the region's indigenous Frappato and Nero D'Avola. In 2012, an additional eight hectares of 20-year-old vines were acquired, will be used to produce more of her SP68. From certified-organic vines, averaging 20+ years old and planted on chalky, sandy soils, the SP 68 Bianco has a bouquet of pungent florals, ground ginger and grapefruit. On the palate it is soft and round. Juicy acidity and tropical citrus tones enliven its tart orchard fruits. The finish is surprisingly long, leaving exotic inner florals and sour melon notes to fade slowly. Pairs well with shellfish and Mediterranean seafood dishes. $32.99

Sfera Rosso Litro, Italy

Varietals: 30% Uva Rara, 30% Barbera, 25% Croatina, 25% Pinot Nero, 15% Riesling Alc.  12.5%

Sfera is a collaboration between small certified-organic farmers and Italian wine importer, Portofino. The series of one liter bottlings are terroir-driven with and collaborate with farmers all across the Italian peninsula. The Sfera Rosso Litro is a collaboration with the Odero family, who have been making beautiful wine in Oltrepo Pavese under the name Frecciarossa for the past hundred years. This is a co-fermented blend of red and white grapes made with low sulfur and low alcohol, but highly drinkable with notes of ripe strawberries, candied red fruit, and red apple skin on the nose. It has a mouthwatering palate and a long finish. Perfect as an aperitivo. Pairs well with charcucterie and cheese. $24.99

Patz & Hall Pinot Noir, Sonoma County, California

Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc.14.5%

The seeds for Patz & Hall were planted in the 1980s when James Hall and Donald Patz struck up a close friendship while working at Flora Springs Winery and Vineyards. The two discovered a mutual enthusiasm for a rich style of wine made by applying traditional winemaking techniques to fruit from elite, small vineyards. Together, they turned Patz & Hall into one of California’s most highly regarded wineries with a celebrated portfolio of single-vineyard wines. A commitment to developing close personal relationships with many of California’s finest growers became the cornerstone of the winery’s success. Sixteen small, independent family-owned vineyard sites come together in this Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. This blend displays classic coastal traits of lively fruit graced with alluring floral and spice notes. Complex and inviting aromas of red fruits include Morello cherry and wild strawberry. A warm spice mix of cinnamon, clove, anise, and coriander accompanies subtle notes of forest floor and pink flowers. The palate is full and finishes with good purity, supported by refined tannins and fresh acidity. Pairs well with tuna, roast chicken, grilled steak. $44.99
