WINES
Stift Klosterneuburg Grüner Veltliner Brut NV, Austria, Varietal: GrünerVeltliner, Alc.12%
The Klosterneuburg wine estate was founded in 1114, when, as legend has it, during the wedding, his bride’s wedding veil was blown off by a gust of wind; Leopold vowed to build a monastery where the veil was found. That spot became the Klosterneuburg Monastery, a religious and cultural center, and the location around which Stift Klosterneuburg has been making wines for more than 900 years. In the modern era, Stift Klosterneuburg is a pioneer in sustainability and climate protection; in 2009 it became Europe’s first carbon-neutral winery. The Grüner Veltliner Brut pours nearly clear with frothy, medium-sized bubbles. Aromas of green apple, pears, and lemon zest mingle with a subtle white pepper note. On the palate, pear and apple mingle with peaches and give way to a dry, yeasty finish. Pairs well with seared tuna and sushi. $19.99
Ameztoi Txakolina, Getariako Txakolina, Spain, Varietal: 100% Hondarrabi Zuri, 10.5% Alc.
Getariako Txakolina also known as Txakoli de Getaria is wine growing area in the Northern Spanish province of Gipuzkoa, on the eastern edge of the Basque country. Most of the viticulture is done within the towns of Aia, Getaria, and Zarautz. The area is just 18km southwest of the French border and 89km east of the City of Bilbao. The Getariako Txakolina is surrounded by the Atlantic ocean from the north and the Pyrenees range from the east. The vineyard surface is approximately 430 hectares with more than 30 wineries in operation. Wines exclusively made from the Hondarrabi Zuri can be found in the picturesque village of Hondarribia. Ameztoi Txakolina is produced from vines dating back to 1918, grown at an elevation of 50 – 200 meters above sea level on the coast of the Basque region of Spain. The grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, and bottled with a little bit of residual carbon to give it its signature spritz. This jazzy wine is a perfect match for oysters, cold crab salad, lobster rolls, fried clams and that last summer cookout on the deck! $24.99
Freire Lobo Branco, Varietals: 50% Encruzado 35% Bical 15% Cercial, Dao, Portugal, Alc.14%
Freire Lobo is a small winery owned and operated by Elisa Freire Lobo located in Oliveira do Hospital, in the central region of Portugal’s Dão region. Elisa has been involved in wine for many years, and perhaps the most profound experience was being assistant winemaker to Alvaro Castro for several years. From her experiences she developed her own philosophy, which is to make wines that express their true sense of place.
Elisa farms 7 hectares of family-owned vineyards located in 4 different parcels. Two of the vineyards are
close to Oliveira do Hospital, and the two others are close to Gouveia, closer to the Serra da Estrela Mountain range. All of the vineyards are 500 to 550 meters in altitude. In 2013, Elisa immediately transformed these vineyards and reintroduced the old pruning Guyot Method to get smaller yields and stopped using any chemicals. All fertilization is made with sheep manure,
she only uses indigenous yeast and sulfur in low doses. Very little work is done in the cellar - the main focus is in the vineyards. The winery is biodynamic and the farming organic. The grapes are hand-picked and held in stainless steel tanks with natural, wild yeast fermentation. This full-bodied, lush wine is wonderful with clam chowder, baked lobster and full-bodied fish, such as tuna, swordfish, and salmon.
Panther Creek Winemaker's Cuvee, Willamette Valley, Oregon, 2019, Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc. 14%
Located in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Panther Creek Cellars has been producing signature Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay wines since 1986. The winery has been recognized for its signature blends as well as single vineyard designate wines. The Panther Pinot Noir is wonderfully complex. Dark garnet in color, it has a beautiful but soft aroma of red cherry and ripe stone fruit with hints of cola, and vanilla. On the palate there is an off-dry taste of stone fruit, moving to strong ripe cherry, then becoming quite dry with citrus and spice at the end. It has a medium to long finish, where the fine tannins appear. Pairs well with braised short ribs, veal dishes, game (deer, venison), grilled chicken breast. $27.99
Icardi Surisjvan Nebbiolo, Langhe, Italy
Varietal: Nebbiolo, Alc.14%
Lino Icardi gave birth to the Icardi winery in Castiglione Tinella, in 1914. Today two of his descendants, Dilui Claudio and Mariagrazia Pierino, follow in their ancestor’s footsteps. They believe in respecting the seasons and the times of nature, and the natural cycle of the vines. Grass, flowers, and plants grow between the rows of the vineyards. They do not use nitrogen products, pesticides, or herbicides. They see themselves as guardians of the land and maintain hectares of forest, without crops, to promote biodiversity. The Icardi Nebbiolo is a ruby red color and has an elegant bouquet with hints of violet and spices that extend to the palate, and a dry finish. Pairs well with roasted root vegetables, pasta with meat, Asian food in brown sauces. $34.99
