Hello Windsor!
E.E. Cummings once wrote, “April is a reminder that life is a beautiful, ever-renewing cycle.” I find this to be especially true in Sonoma County and our wonderful Town.
Unfortunately, the great spring also equates to additional grass and weed growth throughout Windsor. I ask you to please be patient with our contractors and staff as they take a systematic approach to addressing the necessary mowing and abatement.
As you may recall, the Town will not use glyphosate or other synthetic herbicides in parks or public areas for the safety of you, your family, and your pets.
Let’s all give a big thank you to the Town staff who are out working hard to clean up the 110 acres of parks and 26 miles of streetscape.

KEISER PARK PUMP TRACK
GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY
| |
On Friday, April 12, members of the community gathered at Keiser Park to celebrate a significant milestone—the Pump Track Groundbreaking Ceremony! With golden shovels in hand, elected officials, project partners, donors, and Parks and Recreation Commissioners ceremoniously broke ground, marking the beginning of the construction phase of this exciting project. Weather permitting, the Town anticipates completing the track this spring.
The Keiser Park Pump Track is made possible by Redwood Trails Alliance, King Ridge Foundation, Windsor Unified School District, the Town of Windsor, and individual donations from the community. For more information, please visit: https://www.townofwindsor.com/1445/Keiser-Park-Pump-Track.
On April 3, 2024, a group of 20 Windsor staff members took a rare field trip to visit the Geysers geothermal power plant, operated by Calpine. The Geysers have a net power generating capacity of about 725 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 725,000 homes.
|
The Town of Windsor supports the Geysers by sending approximately 200 million gallons per year of recycled water for injection into the Geysers reservoir, which is converted to steam and used to generate more energy. Geothermal energy generated by the Geysers is one of the renewable sources of energy used by Sonoma Clean Power in the EverGreen program.

EVERY 15 MINUTES - WINDSOR HIGH SCHOOL
On April 16, Windsor Road was transformed into a staged vehicle car collision in front of Windsor High School as part of “Every 15 Minutes”. Students, parents, and the community experienced the traumatic scene of a simulated deadly vehicle accident by an impaired driver.
“Every 15 Minutes program is a two-day program focusing on high school juniors and seniors, which challenges them to think about drinking, driving, personal safety, the responsibility of making mature decisions, and the impact their decisions have on family, friends, their community, and many others”, according to California Highway Patrol.
Windsor Police Department, in partnership with the California Highway Patrol, Sonoma County Fire District (SCFD), and Bells Ambulance conducted the “Every 15 Minutes” staged event. Law enforcement performed mock field sobriety tests arresting an intoxicated driver. SCFD conducted a vehicle extrication with Bells paramedics treating and transporting injured patients as Sonoma County Sheriff’s Helicopter H-1 responded giving a sense of urgency and severity to the scene.
|
“Car crashes are a leading cause of death for teens, and about a quarter of fatal crashes involve an underage drinking driver”, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Town would like to thank Windsor Police Chief Michael Raasch for coordinating the event and all the sponsors and partners who participated and made this a successful experience.

WEED ABATEMENT - SPRING HAS SPRUNG!
|
While our gardens enjoy the back-and-forth of rain and sunshine, so do the weeds and grasses in Windsor’s 110 acres of public parks and 26 miles of streetscapes. Our dedicated maintenance crews and contractors are working diligently throughout the Town to manage the rapidly growing vegetation.
The current bloom of weed growth is in part a reflection of the Town’s commitment to organic weed management practices. The Town’s Integrated Pest Management Policy (approved by the Town Council in 2018) allows for only organic pesticides to be used in public parks and streetscapes. (The Town does have an exemption for the limited use of synthetic weed killers on approved street medians and landscaping).
| |
|
The Town of Windsor, in close collaboration with the Sonoma County Fire District, actively manages a year-round weed abatement program that has more than doubled in cost and resources since 2018. Learn more about the Town’s Integrated Pest Management Policy and approved exemptions here: https://www.townofwindsor.com/1165/Integrated-Pest-Management-Program. The public is also invited to attend/view the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on May 8, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., where Town staff will be presenting an overview of the weed abatement program.
We ask all community members to be patient and understanding with Town staff and contractors as they work to create a healthier, organic, and natural landscape environment in Windsor.

Do you know your Evacuation Zone? To assist our community in getting familiar with the zones, Town evacuation maps have been installed in all Town buildings. To expand upon our efforts Town partners that include Windsor Chamber of Commerce, SMART Train Depot, Windsor Library, and Sonoma County Fire District – Station 1 will also have the evacuation map on display. Installation for partner locations is coming soon!
|
The installation of the evacuation map is intended to provide awareness to the community, visitors, and staff working in the field with the opportunity to know where exactly an emergency is occurring. If an emergency alert is issued the evacuation maps will be a valuable resource to be Windsor Ready!
