William R. Boone High School Community Brief

Monday, July 22, 2024

Dear Mark,

In looking ahead to an exciting 2024-2025 school year, hopefully you have been enjoying a wonderful summer! As you will see in this special summer edition, we have stayed very busy with summer school, campus improvements, new faculty & staff hires, professional development trainings, and more in order to make sure everything is ready for a successful opening on Monday, August 12. Please take care to note the important event dates leading up to our first day of school as they may pertain to yourself or your student. We want to make sure everything runs as smoothly and easily as possible for each of our Braves before that first bell rings.

Brave Students Today, Student Leaders Tomorrow!

At the very end of this special summer issue, we close out with Class of 2024 commencement ceremony highlights.

This will be our last week of summer office hours which are currently Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thank you very much for reading and please remember to visit our website and social media platforms all along. If you have any questions not answered there or in this Totem Talk summer issue, please call the school. Thank you for reading and enjoy your week!

Forever Brave,

Dr. Maestre

OCPS asks families to register in advance for transportation services.

To best prepare with the most efficient routing, Orange County Public Schools Transportation Services is asking families to register their intentions with the district.

Orange County Public Schools Transportation Services is asking families to register in advance for transportation services for the 2024-25 school year.

The early registration will help the district best prepare with the most efficient routing.

"Even though the district has worked to fill as many positions as possible, there is still a nationwide shortage of commercial drivers, and OCPS is still being impacted," OCPS representatives said in a press release. "The purpose of this registration is to reduce bus delays and allow for the streamlining of routes to meet the transportation needs of our families."

Families can register by accessing their Skyward Parent Portal account and completing the OCPS School Bus Registration Form.

The form will have a dropdown to choose ridership for each child, with options being in the morning, afternoon, both or not at all.

Summer Facilities Updates

Michael Gantt (Custodial Master Crew Leader seen below far right) and his team dedicate the summer months ensuring our students and staff begin the new school year in a clean and sanitary learning environment! The custodial crew will provide a fresh coat of wax for every hallway and classroom while deep cleaning areas across our school campus. The update and refresh allows for students and staff to return to a pristine learning environment.

Boone High School’s Excellent Custodial Crew!

Grounds

The summer months provide the OCPS Grounds and Pest Control Department to enhance our campus grounds aesthetics. There has been extensive plant and tree trimming, refreshing of our planters, and weeding. This is a before and after view of our campus green up as of July 2024.

Concrete Work

Repairs using heavy machinery are observed over the summer months. Boone High School has aged gracefully but requires a bit of attention. Some of the beautiful oak trees that line our campus have lifted areas of walkways, causing the concrete to slightly lift from its original position. We are dedicated to correcting this issue to avoid a potential tripping hazard. OCPS crews were hard at work ensuring this work was completed during the summer months.

Band Camp

The color guard, leadership and percussion have been working hard this past week in preparation for Band Camp! They are looking forward to having the entire Sound of the Braves on campus for the full band camp starting this Monday, July 22! Everyone is invited to join us for our preview event on Tuesday, July 30th at 7:00 PM at the stadium!

Brave Athletics

Cross Country

Our Cross Country Team attended distance running camp last week at Brevard College in North Carolina. They all get some good quality miles in on the trails and irreplaceable time was spent bonding with their teammates. The days started as early as 5:30 and the hills were steep but the team persevered and made great gains.

Thank you to Coach Roush, Coach Marlier, Coach Schulties, for attending and supporting our runners and Coach Szafran for attending and managing to take amazing photos of the team. Boone High School had the largest XC team in attendance. Our runners are ready for a great season real soon!

BRAVETTES

The Boone High School BRAVETTES had a blast last week at UDA Dance Camp! They worked hard, made memories, and are excited to bring it this coming season!

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2024!

Graduation Highlights (Thursday, May 23, 2024):

Boone Varsity Choir

Ali Stilwell, student body president, shared that she thinks of one word when it comes to the Class of 2024 - PERSEVERANCE. A breakdown of the Class of 2024 experience: Freshman year = 1/2 online and 1/2 in-person; Sophomore year = somewhat back to normal with the return of sporting events and school dances; Junior year = a disruptive hurricane season; and the Senior year = everything is coming to a close. She encouraged the Class of 2024 to embrace every challenge they face, to never back down, and to never give up!

OCPS District 3 School Board Representative Alicia Farrant laughing as she reminded our graduates that they would now never have to hear the Mario Bros. theme song again, but that it sure helped to get you to class on time! (She shared that when the music played, she felt that she too had to pick up the pace!) Representative Farrant also reminded the grads that life's challenges can serve as building blocks to help prepare you for greater victories.

In his remarks, Dr. Maestre emphasized three important success steps for our Brave graduates: 1) Your goals will change your whole life. Set goals and face the future with anticipation. As you continue to evolve, you must be serious about where you want to go and focus on how you're going to get there. Keep in mind that it is not just about reaching your goal, but also about who you become along the journey; 2) Get going and do something. Be action-oriented and work towards what you want in life; and 3) Don't ever settle for anything less than exceptional. Push yourself a little further than what you think is possible and find your greatness!

A tremendous roar echoes through UCF's Addition Financial Arena at the exact moment our seniors turned their cap tassels from right to left symbolizing the transition from student to graduate!

Have a great week!
